Question about swearing
Forums › General Discussion › Question about swearing-
Now first, this is going to be a religious Christian (or possibly Jewish, I'm not quite clear where they overlap and don't in some cases) question. If you are just gonna call the bible a story book or you don't have something to input to this, please leave now.
Now, I got a thought. I asked my dad how exactly we know which words are swear words. He said it says to be able to control your toungue (or something like that) and that the swear words are just words deemed that by society.
So my thought: could we effectively get rid of swear words if we, as society, just except these words as just that, words? Vibrations that our brain correlates with a feeling or a thing or a person or a place? -
It really just depends. Like yesterday when I was just bored a thought came to be a for less than a minute. Swear words are words that are today not mentioned in modern education. Dictionaries don't have them and they are only known from people being taught them and/or overhearing them as a young child from adults and/or other kids. If we drop them they would disappear since surfa e education doesn't teach those swear words. And honestly it is a word with a meaning and an insult is just a word that is meant to cause temporary mental harm and/or annoyance. It doesn't have a physical effect. Me saying 'hi' or 'f you' has the same physical effect as it is just vibration passed through the air towards the other person or other people. How people mentally register and handle it is what causes the issues. If people just learn to accept them as just another word, at least view swear words like that, then they are fine. But if they let it affect them, unneeded issues will arise.

I think so, because the only reason that they are curse words are because some guy said oh $&@" is a bad word so if we eliminate that thought then they aren't bad anymore ...
-
Yes, we definatly could. Take the word gay for example. It used to mean happy. Nowadays if you call someone gay, they do not think you are saying they are happy. Why? Because society uses the word gay, to mean homosexual theese days!

"Fuck" is in many dictionaries. It is noted as being slang though.
-
Swear words DO appear in dictionaries. To answer the original question from a religious standpoint, I'd say it's the mindset and intent along with the use of the word. For instance, "fuck" was originally not a swear word I don't believe. It was an acronym.

Well I never looked them up in a dictionary. Could you give me the definition listed and I mean a definition from a non-internet based dictionary. People are bound to say 'google it' or google is your friend'. Well I would like a physical, real world dictionary to have that word in it and what the definition is. A dictionary coming from people who took hundreds and likely thousands of hours to compile the words and what to and what not to put in the dictionary."Fuck" is in many dictionaries. It is noted as being slang though.

I think timing is key and don't overuse it. -
What does the fuck word even mean?

Sorry UA, I don't have a print dictionary handy. But I do remember way back in primary school we used to look it up and giggle at it.

If ur looking for the most Christian answer possible, think about it like this. Curse words don't really exist unless use intend to use them as a curse. Its more of a self control thing. A lot of people substitute the word "fudge" for "fuck" because they have that last second to change it, but then "fudge" becomes a curse because of how they meant it. Im pretty sure Christians shouldn't even have the kind of feeling to curse someone if we were perfect.

Definitions of fuck-
verb (used with object)
1. to have sexual intercourse with.
2. to treat unfairly or harshly. -
Swear words used to be "curse words" back in the witch trial days. That's why Christianity and other religions say they're bad.

The most commonly cited explanation I've heard: Fornication Under Consent of King. Something about a food shortage and people needing consent to have sex in order to control the population.

I know that giving someone the middle finger originated in medieval times. Archers used their middle finger to pull the bow string back. If they were captured in battle, they would have there middle finger on their hand cut off. So giving someone the finger was the same as saying, "haha, I got my finger and u don't"

The word 'crap' (which in my opinion, isn't really a bad word), is actually taken from a man named John Crapper, who invented the toilet.

Words only mean what we attach to them. People feel the need to say words that are "bad" to be cool. Even if we could eradicate swear words, people could invent new ones to be "cool"

I agree with many of you especially the guy sbove me but swear words arent at all that bad unless used to cause emotional harm to someone by offending them. Freedom of Speech i did a speech this year on music censorchip and got a 100% because many people today use those words to express themselves and nobody really does anything about it

You guys are smart 😄

Bollocks is not a swear word. Legally. 🔨

If someone says they are going
To fuck me up, then why don't they. They are hiding behind words. In a way, not only could this eliminate swearing but also eliminate verbal bullying. -
Fuck was once stamped on prostitutes court sentences as F.U.C.K. It stood for Forbidden Use of Carnal Knowledge.

I love 'olde English' swearing! Bollocks, Wank, Wanker, Shagging, Twat, etc. Terms that never found there way to the USA.
