-
Look at the other post you made, drizzy said dont do it lol

NO! i can tell u 20 other jobs btr for the same scores required
-
Depends what your in to... I've known some ppl who loved it and others who hated everyday... If u choose that mos than I suggest workin toward becoming a FO forward observer.. Of all the guys I knew in arty the FO seemed to enjoy it most... Lol
-
Also if you don't plan on being a life'er than pick a job that u can help you transfer back to the civ world
-
i think he should think about his future. and field artillery will not do anything for him outside of the service. doesnt matter if he likes it or not when you arent in the service anymore
-

wouldn't you have basic mechanic skills for fixing minor stuff. You could go to a mechanic shop and say you can do this and that and you would learn pretty quick.serial wrote:

If they are willing to train me than it could work... But all depends on the shop... It's hit or miss..... But always worth a shot -

You know, employers look for people that can handle large, expensive responsibilities, and can work in a team to accomplish a mission. I'm sure you already work that angle though.Yup acourse I spent almost 6 yrs as a tank operator... It was great blowin shit up... But now it does me no good... When I tell employers that I drove an 18,000 ton nuclear missile submarine, they don't come back and ask if I can handle a little stress.
Of course, they don't realize that driving the boat is a noob job... But my regular job doesn't have the same impact. 😄

Navy has acronyms for rates. It's not always clear, but you can spell it out and it's still a rate. I was ET(S). Electronics technician, submarine. Now it would be Electronics technician, submarine navigation. (they changed it) That's clear, and no google required. Some are harder to figure out. Take for example: HT. Hull Technician. That's a plumber, or "turd chaser" in laymans terms.

I worked comm with the FA. you're basically the infantry, except absolutely no respect. The artilley is effectively useless in modern three-block warfare because the kill radius of a 155mm artillery shell is roughly 50m, with a wounding ("casualty") radius of 250m. Sounds friggin awesome on paper, then you go overseas and realize you're useless because that's way too much collateral damage for a stabilization and sustainment operation, like what you see now in Afghanistan.
-
If you want my advice, and still want to blow stuff up FA style:
Mortarmen are used extensively but the gear is heavy if you're on foot.
Fire supportmen (arty liaisons) actually call for the fire. An artyman (we call them gun-rocks) almost never see the impact of the artilley. FSMs do. Plus you get good comm training that maybe applies to other stuff.Me, I like communications.

I call BS, you will get to do your job plenty, if your commander has a good set of balls. Ours did, we were blowing stuff up left and right. Our BN shot 37 Guided MLRS in 2 weeks. We set all kinds of records over there for amounts of ordinance used. And this was last June/July. And I was in Iraq. I did the type 2 CAS 4 times. Shot an artillery smoke mission, to screen friendly movement while they were getting shot at. Directed countless Apache pilots to blow up buildings. Shot several mortar missions. Fired two Excalibur missions, those are the new GPS guided artillery rounds.
-
I know what Excalibur is, I've fired it. My BLT admittedly didn't like artillery, but unless you're doing a major empty-a-gridsquare-of-life operation a la Fallujah or Kandahar, I don't think you'd see it used as much. The mission's success rests in the opinions of the indigenous people, which isn't won through devastating artillery strikes in the middle of cities. Now, the caves in Afghanistan are a different story, but even the "expeditionary" M777 is ill suited to the rough terrain. Mortars and air, better.
I also get the distinct impression you're not a gun rock, because you deal with more fire support than just 155mm towed artillery.
PS, MLRS is a waste of money.
-
In my plt I was the expert on CAS, as I'm a certified JFO. That's what my training is for and the PL has to many other responsibilities to worry about CAS. Every PL that I've ever seen that has told me he didn't need me as he could do it himself screwed something up. Sometimes big, sometimes not. Most PL's that I've run into don't even know the difference between CAS and attack aviation.
I am not in an arty BN, I am in an infantry BN. We coordinated with an MLRS battalion to shoot for us, really not that uncommon.
I was in Diyala province (Baqubah) and most of this ordinance(though not all) was shot during operation Arrowhead Ripper. We shot illum too, but most of what we shot were the GMLRS. Its great and you don't have to worry about collateral damage as much. Reason being is the min safe distance is much smaller and every time we used it, it hit exactly where it was supposed to. When you have an FO that can pull a 10 digit grid off his map, you're in good shape.
