Are martial arts a waste of time ?
Forums › General Discussion › Are martial arts a waste of time ?-
I had a friend demonstrating some moves he had learnt to me the other day involving somebody coming so stab you , I believe most of these moves are useless and anyone coming at you with a knife is gonna be stabbing down in a frenzy and is gonna slice you to pieces.
IMO in any of these cases where someone has a weapon you are better off taking your chances running. -
I think that martial arts are disciplined and there's no discipline in a street. I'm not talking about mma fighters just your average joe having his 1 lesson a week type person who thinks he can take on a dude with a knife could b a bad idea.

A shot to the chest from my Sheldon will definitely take care of anyone trying to put the "HiYah" on my person. Sheldon solves all of my problems. He's so charming...But to answer your question, I believe martial arts teach discipline, but any martial artist that comes up against more than one street-fighter won't stand a chance.

First thing I learned in my few martial arts lessons, no matter how good you are, if you take on a guy with a knife, you're gonna get cut. So unless he's an expert, then no, he should not take on a guy with a knife. That doesn't mean martial arts are a waste.

Saw this documentary about this Dutch dude who learnt all these martial arts and was teaching fighting techniques to their military. It's been a long time so my memory is hazy about what he was doing exactly so if this rings any bells with anyone please feel free to chime in and correct.
Basically, he was saying that the first 2-5 years of learning a martial art was the most dangerous for a person as that is when you are likely to want to use it in a situation and your confidence in your abilities outweighs your actual abilities. This is when people get in trouble and bite off more than they can chew.
But, yeah, I think sure you can learn to defend yourself adequately with enough training and the correct martial art. And if all else fails, then run!!!!!!!
-
I trained 10 years and did various classes in knife defense.
While the training can *help* you defend yourself from a knife attack, there is no question about it, I'd rather not be attacked. My first defense to a knife fight, if possible, is to run like hell.

Martial arts are useful if you use them for their practical purpose: to learn sel disciple, stay physicall fit.
If you are trying to learn combat effectiveness, no -
Look up Krav Maga. Most martial arts in a street fight are useless, and a waste of energy. The question should really be asked specifically what martial arts work better in a street fight. Although any discipline will help especially if you become very proficient. But I will say krav maga is probably the best for street fightings. Kung Fu San SOO is as well. I've been in a lot of fights in my lifetime, I would say Krav Maga has helped me the most. Some fights did involve weapons as well. But my father taught me to fight from a very young age. The importance was always stressed to me throughout my life. If you have any questions OP, you can PM me if you would like to.

Also havoc is right. Best to run in a situation with knives or weapons, if you know that isn't possible wouldn't you rather be prepared instead of just having the attitude of "martial arts is useless" "it will never happen to me."I trained 10 years and did various classes in knife defense.

Well I think it depends.. In my martial arts class, we are taught how to disarm the person of the weapon and then either run away or proceed to beat the crap out of them. 😁 but they say the best thing to do is to run away if you can. But if you're caught off guard by someone with a knife, those few lessons of defense could possibly come in handy.
-
It all depends. Some peopleewrn fast and are amazing hand to hand combat and martial fighters. Some martial arts you learn basic displine and defense, others can be brutual. Some teach you some amazing things. Like for a joint and response ability. If you response fast, you can avoid a melee weapon. If you can, dodge the weapon and go for the joint. From there force the weapon out of the hand and do wha you can to stop the enemy. People think it is useless but it can help. However, when stopping an enemy, don't over do it. Just stop them enough so you can get away. Or run like hell from the start.

Also this isn't true to a degree. I've witnessed fighters take on multiple people at a time (and not the tv crap where one person waits then gets beat then the next guy goes in) lol like a big circle jerk until its their turn to fight. But the aim of Krav Maga would be to immobilize the person quickly in the event of multiple attackers. The training is always surrounding that. I enjoy the training of Krav Maga because it's usually a huge workout in the beginning to get you at your weakest point then they start. So you are always training at the weak tired points so when it comes time you will be more prepared. Number one thing in reality though is to try and deescalate any situation before it gets to that point....But to answer your question, I believe martial arts teach discipline, but any martial artist that comes up against more than one street-fighter won't stand a chance.

Absolutely.

Muai thai has got to be the best defence against anything IMO all competitive mma fighters seem so know that and jujitsu invade it goes to the floor from what I can see !!

See knife=run
See gun=runBottom line if you can run. Chances are they will miss. I've read studies about how even trained individuals like police miss more often than they hit their targets. Also most victims of gun fire survive their wounds.
Whatever you do don't get in the assailants vehicle, house, apartment or whatever. Bad things happen. Run, scream do not comply. You will be a much less attractive target to the bad guy. If the bad guy catches you. Yell, scream, bite, hit, kick, gouge eyes, keep fighting until you die or they stop their attack.
Never give of the vibe of a victim. Act confident even when not. Criminals target people based on behavior.
Don't start fights, avoid them.

I think the mix between Martial arts and a consealed carry permit is the best

Lol yeah but there are some people who should just not own guns. There was actually a study a read about a while back, where they gave two people a concealed weapon (a training replica that fires wax rounds, I think) and everyone else were just bystanders. One gunman was a robber, the other an armed citizen. The study concluded that an armed citizen did more harm than good. Bystanders got shot and such, as opposed to the control, where there was only an armed thief, and no one was hurt.I think the mix between Martial arts and a consealed carry permit is the best

If you take MA thinking you're going to beat 20 people like a kung-fu movie, then yeah it's a waste of time. But if you go in wanting discipline, fitness, history, and possibly learning how to fight (depending on the teacher, type, etc.), then it's all good.
I (involuntarily...I got jumped) fought a guy with a box cutter when I was younger. Yeah, I got slashed, but my MA fitness helped me outrun the guys...haha. And just maybe my MA reactions helped me from getting cut worse.

Yeah. Got jumped one day walking home from school. One of them pulled a knife and stabbed just below my belly button. It got lodged in my belt buckle and only went in about an half an inch, but they ran off after. I never even saw the knife. No amount of training would've help. I most definitely should have just ranIf you take MA thinking you're going to beat 20 people like a kung-fu movie, then yeah it's a waste of time. I'll also add, have you ever fought someone with MA fighting (as opposed to just training) experience? I have, and it wasn't fun...ha.
On the flip side, my boy fought a guy with a knife about 5 yeas ago, and using his Krav Maga, took the guy's knife and knocked him out. Also, Google the vid of little Roger Huerta destroying that football guy outside a club in Texas, or the MMA guy disarming a guy with a gun and literally breaking his face in Chicago, or the two UK MMA guys who were dressed like women on their way to a costume party who got jumped by a group of guys and beat down all of them... So it can work, if you SPAR a lot and learn the to FIGHT instead of doing forms.

Mma is a different story I reckon the octagon is the closest your gonna get to a street fight those fighters would smash anyone at just one and a fair few started as bare knuckle fighters anyway , apparently lol !

Depends what dojo and what type. Probably mma/ jujitsu with a good dojo thats not gonna "make your kid a black belt in a week"
