Are martial arts a waste of time ?

It depends on what martial art. If you're learning a displinary art (taekwondo, American karate, Kung fu) you shouldn't be too overconfident in your ability to actually fight. If you're taking a combat/defense/killing based martial art (jujitsu, sambo, pencak Silat) you could fairly easily take out a guy attacking you with a knife, though you still might be cut.

Mma is a different story I reckon the octagon is the closest your gonna get to a street fight those fighters would smash anyone at just one and a fair few started as bare knuckle fighters anyway , apparently lol !
MMA is a martial art, though. All of the examples I listed above were stand up street fights, and the guys used the boxing, kick boxing, and Muay Thai - all martial arts - they learned for MMA. All real life examples of martial arts being very effective in the streets.

I've been training +/-2 years in MMA type MA (standing & ground) and I've had my concealed weapons permit for much longer than that. By far, however, my best weapon is my brain. Avoid bad situations, diffuse them when u can't. Escape them if u can and devastate the enemy if all else fails. Another 15 years of training wouldn't make me feel comfortable facing someone with a knife, but I think I am better prepared than I was 2 years ago. Moral of the story: MA are fun and a great way to get some great exercise, & they might be useful for other things too.

Martial arts are very useful. I've won many fights by not fighting. If you can subdue an opponent without striking or without being struck, then you will see it's usefulness. Best offense is a great defense. An theres nothing wrong with hauling ass and gettin the fuck outta dodge when weapons come into play.
Run, run, run away
Live to fight another day!7⃣1⃣😜🚌

Honestly I don't think "MMA" would make me feel comfortable in the least bit because they don't teach knife defenses, weapons defenses, or street fighting, it's all based on competition and rules. What has made me more comfortable is taking defense courses in krav maga, in military some were good but I still prefer krav maga, and Kung fu San Soo. Bottom line street fighting is an ENTIRELY different realm then learning martial arts that are competition based they don't teach you crap in real self defense. You get me in a fight on the street I will bite your damn balls off if that's what it will take to win. Anything goes, if you don't have that mindset in the street you've already lost. I would use whatever means necessary to win. If I see a stick, rock, bottle whatever needed. If its at that point you need to do whatever you can do 1. Deescalate the situation 2. If that doesn't work flee the situation if possible 3. Defend yourself by any means necessary if the other two don't work.

And I actually have in a fight I was losing (they had me in a choke hold on the ground) (their balls were in distance to their disadvantage)grab someone by the balls squeeze as hard as I could until they let go (which was very quickly) then grab their head and repeatedly bashed it into the steel deck below us until it was over.

Except mr. MiyagiA shot to the chest from my Sheldon will definitely take care of anyone trying to put the "HiYah" on my person. Sheldon solves all of my problems. He's so charming...But to answer your question, I believe martial arts teach discipline, but any martial artist that comes up against more than one street-fighter won't stand a chance.

To give you an idea of this...a guy I know who goes on and on about his MMA and BJJ fighting and how well it would work in the street yadda yadda..got in a bar fight with a guy (they went into the street) he took the guy down beating the crap out of him on the ground (total BJJ style) another buddy of the guy on the ground kicked him with his boot square in the face. BJJ worked out well for him didn't it? Obviously "he lost." out cold. He started taking Krav Maga alongside his other MMA now. Competition rules. Krav would never tell you to go down on the ground with someone and if you did to get back up.Sammy Guns🔫🌊🗻 wrote:

Yes I do understand Krav mixes in BJJ now, but it's taught on getting up and out of situations, it's taught more so because of popularity BJJ is becoming.
-
To the guy's credit had it been one on one he would have been great. BJJ is effective..one on one.
-
Never take on a knife. Unless your crocodile dundee. If you want a fighting sport try boxing.

BJJ is fine for one on one but ur right, it isn't for any more than that. If I go to the ground I'm going to break something and quickly get back up, and hopefully out of there. If I could train krav maga locally I would; especially if I went places I might have to fight. I'm 6'5" and short drunks always feel like they have to prove something. In the 15 years I've been old enough to go to bars I haven't had to lay hands on anyone. I've been able to walk away or talk in every situation. MA are great for many things, but at the end of the day it's just another tool in the toolbox, just like my pistol.

Agreed. They don't have any Krav locally? 😨 Where you from? The two krav organizations in the US that were once together or worked together in a since have split into their own organizations.
