Mythbusters was wrong, to many glanced over variables and not a realistic enough test vehicle. In actuality the iPods, iPads, and non-transmitting devices are fine. But they make a blanket rule for the lowest common denominator to avoid having to explain all this everytime to an idiot mass audience. Imagine if they told you to turn off your pacemaker, or wrist watch. The cellular devices are different, some of the frequencies they transmit on cause a feedback on the pilots headset, could cause a distraction at best, or instrument failure at worst.

Also the equipment the airplanes use to talk to each other in terms of their relative movement and distance from each other (T.C.A.S., traffic clearance avoidance system) uses those same frequencies and could be potentially catastrophic if interfered with. Also, the cell towers are path-of least resistance, so if you take your cellular device up to 35k feet, you're monopolizing the band width becasue of a positional advantage gained from being able to see thousands of towers at once. That reduces everyone's signal on the ground who can only line-of-sight 2-3 towers. The FAA is currently reviewing its policies about non transmitting devices during takeoff and landing. Expect a change in the next few years, but cell stuff is off the table.

It's not the FAA. 14 CFR 91.21 and 121.306 (which applies specifically to airlines) do not prohibit any electronic device, provided that it has been found to not cause any interference.master matt wrote:

I personally fly with my phone on every day, text and make calls from the air. I used to get some audio feedback from older phones, but I haven't had that issue for years. I have never seen any navigation interference, so as far as my big boss (the FAA) is concerned, it's ok
47 CFR 22.925 is from the FCC. They ban cell use in airplanes. Doesn't say why, but they do.
