Is Alcoholism A Disease?
Forums › General Discussion › Is Alcoholism A Disease?-
I was watching intervention and they kept saying this young woman had a disease, and it was being an alcoholic. I don't see how an addiction is a disease really. It sounds more like an excuse to me.
Now, no disrespected meant for any addicts out there. I understand that once you're hooked, you're hooked. It's hard and I'm not saying to downplay the whole thing either. It just doesn't sound right to me when I hear peop,e running around drunk saying, "It's a disease, it's not my fault."
What do you all think, disease or not?

Reality shows will rot your brain
-
I think certain genetic makeups can make people more susceptible to becoming addicted to any substance, but I don't have any idea if there's been research on it specific to alcohol.

It's just a sign of having something missing in your life. People use it like many things to plug the hole

Illness is a better word.

Norm McDonald.
"I always try to look at the bright side of things. So I said, Yes, it's true you have a disease... But I think you got the best one. It's the only one where you get to drink booze all the time."
...
"What are your symptoms?
I get happy. And I find I can talk to people a little easier. And sometimes, I'll go to a bar and find a woman with the same disease and I'll f*ck her. But that's only in the advanced stages of the disease, you understand."

I think people that hasn't been around an addict or been one themsleves has the proper experiences to form a valid opinion on this subject. Addiction is a disease that affects not only the user but the people around them as well.

I *dont* think people that have never been around an addict or been one themsleves has the proper experiences to form a valid opinion on this subject. Addiction is a disease that affects not only the user but the people around them as well.

Alcoholism is the only disease you get yelled at for. No one ever says "You are a leper and need to get help". Or emphysema. Or epidermolysis bullosa. Or male pattern baldness.
Peoria are jerks like that. -
Alcoholism is not a disease it's a crutch ppl use, and makes them feel better about themselves and family members to call it a disease. So they can say its not there fault
-
Addiction isn't a disease in the same sense as cancer, for example, but it's looked upon as a disease in that it requires both physical and mental health treatment. Alcohol addiction is actually one of the most dangerous to kick and can definitely cause death. 12th Doctor is also correct in that there is literally an alcoholism gene that's inherited. Couple this with the fact that many addicts have mental and/or emotional illnesses, and you have what most of the medical industry classifies as a disease.

But the term disease defines that it cannot be stopped or treated. being an alcoholic is like smoking. you need willpower. my step-dad was an alcoholic. 6cases of wine a day. he stopped for my mum. now he loves caffeine.

To be honest, you have to classify what a disease is. A disease is a disordered or incorrect function of the body.
Before the 1970's, homosexuality was a disease. Some courts tried justifying that porn addiction was a disease.

Well that's obviously a disease defined by the scientific and medical community. It's considered a sexually transmitted disease. Take a quick perusal at my definition of what a disease is.FussyJosh wrote:

I think they mean addiction is the disease. Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol, smoking is an addiction to nicotine, etc. While it isn't a disease in the traditional sense, it is detrimental to your health and requires treatment to recover. Some people are more susceptible to addiction than others, idk if it's hereditary or genetic.
