Mandotory voting
Forums › General Discussion › Mandotory voting-
We were having a debate on it in class the other day. Do you think the government should make voting mandatory?
-
No voting is a choice not a requirement.
-
No Because some of us don't vote out of protest
-
Oh heck no. That would be a bad thing. Since turning of age I have only voted once in the years I have been old enough. Even then it was because my bro got on his high horse about me not using my right lol.
I normally dont vote because none of the people standing have ever really shone or stood out as having my best interests at heart.
Who knows. One day that might change. We all need a little hope. :)
-
Not a chance. I dont vote. Never have, probably never will. I have yet to see a candidate I want to vote for, on anything.
(my brother votes, he picks or make and "other" catagory, and puts Kool-Aid, or something like that.) -
There are too many voters who don't read or care for politics as it is. Forcing people to vote about something they don't know about will only result in us finding out what the country's favourite colour is.

Can't secure freedom by taking it away. Voting is a choice.
-
If you don't vote you can't moan about politics.
You had a choice (a small one) to make a difference, but If you chose to flitter that choice away that was fought for then you can't complain.
But no forcing people to vote is wrong they should be proud to be able to do it. -

i'm sorry if you tell me to choose corrupt idiot A or corrupt idiot B....
i stand up and say you'll are idiots.......then when either of em F's up, I stand up and say, see i told you, you'll are idiots, then i look at all the people who voted and say, you'll are idiots too -

Voting should be a choice. This is because there would always be a time where all candidates may not be in the voters favor.
-
Make em vote. Let them have an option to abstain on the ballot paper.
-
I forget what country it was.. Australia maybe? Anyway they have mandotory voting but like one of their choices is neither, and if people don't like either of the candidates they can vote in that category. And if that category gets enough votes each party withdrawals their candidate and finds another one that the people will agree with
-
Yea people fought to give us the right to vote but that same fight also gave us the freedom to choose not to.
By putting the option to abstain on a ballot then forcing people to tick it is just patronising people who use the right not to vote.
If none of the runners stand up and make ME notice them I wont vote for them. Does that mean I don't wanna bitch when they raise my taxes or close hospitals near me etc. course I wanna bitch and I will. Thats why its up to the next runner to come to me and show me why they would make a difference to me.
They are there to serve us, not the other way round. :)

The interesting thing is how many people consider themselves independent or libertarian that don't vote. Its like whenever they run a get out an vote campaign hardcore it always seems like republicans gain ground (the irony being they're actually same). If you were to mandate voting while you would hope more independents would make it through the system the likely result would be far too many of one party in office (supermajorities causing the most damage)

I do vote, even for a lot of local elections. But I don't always vote on every topic. The choice to abstain from an issue is important. It happens even in the senate, they have to give a reason, but even there, where their job is to vote, they don't have to.
It's a slippery slope to require something like that.
-
Voting is a privilege.

In fact you could probably argue that if you put a 5 year moratorium on new laws and regulations the economy would probably recover a lot faster.
Change isn't always good.

Then you have no right to complain. Either you are part of the solution or you are in the way. Not voting is a lousy way of protesting.

I didn't say you were but essentially isn't a protest a complaint? Define top? I was my union president and did quiet a bit. I may not have effected the government on a national level but I can assure you I have effected the families of the people I represent. I have used my voice and my vote and in doing so improved things for all of us. If I was to sit by and do nothing then that in my opinion is a failure.

If you want everyone to vote do this for me. Go to your local Walmart and tell me if you want those people picking political canidates
-
I find the people who go to Saks are far more out of touch than the people who shop at Wal-Mart. Being impoverished doesn't mean you are an idiot..
