"Look ahead!" exclaimed Yohan. On the horizon was a few small columns of smoke. The pair stumbled up over a dune, too exhausted to run, and looked down into the valley. The Valley of Defiance, it was called, and within were several fires and tents. A few sentries were in sight and Hectatimus recognized one, Alik, and they carefully made there way down the precarious slope to meet with him.

Awesome work

[i'm trying to think of something to add but nothing's coming]
-
I saw this and my eyes watered at the memory of this majestic time.
-
Alik was a classmate of Hectatimus in the academy, and where Hectatimus was headstrong and brash, Alik was calculating and calm.
As Yohan and Hectatimus approached Alik, bent over a map of the surrounding area, he looked up and waved. "Hectatimus, how goes things in the kingdom?" "Not well, a recent attack occured, but the attacking force was repelled by a sudden burst of light and a strange craft landing past yonder mountains." "Ah," Alik said, "The green boulder, as the nomad tribes coming from that direction call it. We were gathering an expedition to find the 'craft', as you call it." Hectatimus motioned for Yohan to come. "Perhaps we may join this expedition?" Alik furrowed his brow and tugged at his belt, adjusting it. "Who is this lad? Your apprentice?" "You... could say that, yes." Alik turned and motioned for our heroes to follow. "Come, we may converse in my tent." -
As they walked, Alik told Hectatimus of how he procured the prostigious career as Head Strategist for the Kingdom and, later, Coordinator of Land Defense and Trade Security. Likewise, Hectatimus regaled his journey to the Northern Mountains, where he single-handedly wiped out the Frost Barbarians and how he traveled to the South Sea and destroyed the Fairian Armada, the Lizard-Beast Aaghwar and the Kraken in a day. Alik stopped him, "Wasn't it the Jordonian Armada and the Serpentine Assassins last time?" Hectatimus laughed, "I must be forgetting in my old age." Alik rolled his eyes as he opened his tent flap.
-
'Even the tent is nicer than my house,' thought Yohan as he wandered the guilded room. "Yohan," Alik said, "Would you mind stepping out for a few minutes?" He tossed Yohan a bag of coin, "Go to the tavern and have a hot meal." Yohan complied, but kept an eye out for trouble as he walked. His mother always told him that the wilderness was frought with danger, bandits, rogues, were-lions, even dragons, but he was sure she just made that up to keep him in the house at night. He walked through the little town that was expanded by the military encampment surrounding it. He passed a dirty alley and saw a glint of steel. He dove to the ground as a young man dressed in all black swung a hooked blade over Yohan's head. Yohan rolled to the right and stood, drawing his knife.
-
Yohan swung at the man, who caught the blade and twisted it out of Yohan's grasp. He just as easily plucked the coin pouch from the farmboy's belt and ran down the alley. Yohan gritted his teeth and ran after the theif. He reached a dead end, but saw the man on a ladder, climbing upward. Yohan gave chase, scaling the ladder. Yohan reached the roof as the theif turned to him and grinned, then leapt to another roof. Yohan ran and jumped, and as he plummeted to the ground, he realised 10 coins wasn't worth this."Damn," Yohan groaned as he sat up. He was relatively unharmed, besides a few already-developing bruises, thanks to him landing in a shop stall which, thankfully, was filled with cloth. He clambered out as the shopkeaper yelled at him in the local language, spoken by the nationality of Fraitlanians, who made up the majority of residents and nomads in the area. Yohan shrugged at the man and limped back to the tent.

Hahaha nice work 👍👏👏

This should be published

I think we need a summary of what's happened. My mind hurts right now trying to figure it out- and I wrote most of it. Lol! So how about this: The knights are marching off into the wilderness to find the crashed ship of Bar'ahla which contains the materials to stop the destruction of the humans on earth which was set forth by a race of shapeshifters who want their revenge on the humans. Or something.
-
And Yohan is a chosen one of some sort.
-
I might edit out a few of the input from some people early on.
-
As Yohan was returning to his master he saw a man being whipped in the square. When he asked the spectators what it was for they replied "he dared to knock over a trash can". Knowing this was wrong he grabbed a torch from a wall and burned the whip while freeing the man. He was to know be know as "Blazing Whip"
-
Back in Alik's tent, Hectatimus told alik about their quest to get to the crashed heavenly vessel and how they had to catch up to the king's main army. Alik smiled and rapped on the desk three times, summoning a platoon of his personal bodyguard to arrest Hectatimus. "Alik, what's going on?!" Alik chuckled. "You wouldn't understand, human. The pain of genocide- being one of the few surviving members of your own race. The loneliness. For my entire life, and my father's, and his father before him, we have strived for our revenge on you." Hectatimus had been caught totally off guard. This, of course, was not the real Alik. "Where is the real Alik?!" he protested as the guards began to drag him away. "He's in prison, of course, along with your friend Yohan. Yohan's dumb ass interfered with a whipping so we didn't need to fetch him ourselves." Hectatimus was knocked unconscious and taken to the prison alongside Alik and Yohan.
-
Hectatimus woke up to the stench of a jail cell. Everything about the place was dead or decaying- the stained walls, the insects, the rodents, the piled feces in the corner. Worse was the bloody mutilated corpse hanging from a chain by the only window. Beside Hectatimus were three other people: Yohan, Alik, and a Chinese man who looked to be two hundred years old with a unbelievably rotten banana superglued to his forehead. "What's with the banana?" Hectatimus asked slowly, still in awe of his surroundings. The old man, who appeared to be in a meditative trance, answered with a scratchy voice, "lost bet seventy years ago." "Oh." Hectatimus replied. The old man still hadn't moved. The other two were still asleep.
-
A prison guard opened the slit in the door and set four bowls of nasty looking gruel on the floor, the slit closing before Hectatimus even noticed it had opened. He moved closer to investigate the gruel. It was muddy green colored broth with chunks of some kind meat and slices of a dirty carrot. It stank, but not near as badly as the rest of the room, and Hectatimus noticed he was incredibly hungry, so using the crude utensil and his hands he sloppily slurped up the gruel. Setting the bowl down, he noticed the Chinese man had been staring at him with one eye open, still in the meditative trance. "What're you looking, old man?!" "Been decades since I last ate," came the reply. "Trained myself in ancient Yggstravein meditation techniques. I don't need food or water. Only meditation." Hectatimus wiped his mouth with his sleeve. The situation was getting weirder and weirder.
-
"What's happening...?" came a mumble from the other side of the room. Hectatimus glanced over and saw Yohan sitting up. "You're finally awake," he answered. "Someone apparently doesn't want us to get to the crashed ship. One of them was disguised as Alik, the real Alik is here with us." Yohan rubbed his eyes. "But why would it matter if they stop us?" he wondered aloud. "They would want to stop the king's army. Not a couple of stragglers." Hectatimus rubbed his left earlobe in thought.
