It's called a carona (like the beer, only better). It's caused by ice particles in the upper levels of the troposphere. Normally they can't be seen, they aren't dense enough to form cirrus clouds. It's a pretty cool weather event.
I'm glad to know my minor in meteorology has paid off in some way...

Actually there are halos and coronas. Refraction vs diffraction. Without seeing it obviously we cant say which one it is especially since the same weather produce both!
