Skyrim is ok. Not the best. I'd say BF3 and Batman: Arkham City and Uncharted 3 are really great.

Games that you should get and descriptions:
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim:
The best RPG available, great for adventuring, exploring, and growing in skills/level. Many different quests, storylines, and customization options. Has something for just about everyone.
-Halo Reach:
A good futuristic shooter, with a great, interactive campaign with many large scale battles and drivable and gunnable vehicles, along with a solid multiplayer system. Customizing maps with your own add-ins is great for wars with friends.
-Red Dead Redemtion:
I haven't played this game much, although I do know that it is a western themed shooter with good blood affects and a law system, along with multiple guns that can be bought, horses to be ridden, and locations to visit. -
-Assassin's Creed:
Once again, I haven't played these games much. The action is good, with different weapons to choose from. Later games in the series have more in depth gameplay options. The most recent also include a multiplayer mode.
-Gears of War:
The Gears of War games are great shooters, with over the top action and tons of blood and gore. Multiple guns, varied enemies, and co-op campaign make this an extremely enjoyable gameThese are all of the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Who the hell didn't reccomend Saints Row: The Third? You get to hit guys with big purple dildos for cryin' out loud. Fantastic game. Better than the first two.

Skyrim is only good if you're mature and smart enough to handle it. You get lost a lot and have about 25 quests at once later on, but its amazing.
