As some of you know I'm taking a plane trip to washington dc and was wondering if the gps will be able to locate me if i'm moving that fast?
-
I thought you couldn't use the Internet on planes.
-
Well air trans has wifi on it's planes so I assume it's ok

You should be in airplane mode with wifi on. That will probably put your location in the Atlanta terminal for the entire trip. Been there, done that. If you turn on the phone, I don't know how well GPS will work. But you aren't going to try, are you? 😉😉

I doubt it would work, sometimes it has a hard enough time finding me in the car.

It'll locate you to wherever the airplane's wireless provider is located. When I fly VA it always locates me in SFO or somewhere near DFW.

Today it's ridiculous. The fears and warnings date back to the early days of flying and radio when simples radios could cause intereference
Phones and gadgets today still can, but on a level to bring down a plane.

Quote From Mythbusters regarding cell phone use on flights:
When you make a call at 10,000 feet, the signal bounces off multiple available cell towers, rather than one at a time. That means too many phone-happy jetsetters might clog up the networks on the ground, which is why the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) — not the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) — banned cell use on planes.

That's interesting, considering how in flight wifi works. There is only one company in the US authorized to provide in flight communications. It'll locate you to wherever the airplane's wireless provider is located. When I fly VA it always locates me in SFO or somewhere near DFW.
It works over the 800 mhz EVDO system and connects to cell towers on the ground. Ir seems like it would locate you to what ever tower you were connected to at the time.
What realy sucks is that it only works over land, so flying to and from Hawaii, we don't get in flight wifi.
