  Better to ask about who is the best in their era's. Training and workout techniques change about every 5-7 years. Many that might have been awesome 10 years ago would be the waterboy's of today.

  Wow, hard to think of guys like Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Johnny Unitas, Bronko Nagurski and Jim Thorpe being waterboys. Set aside training techniques, changes in style of play, new equipment and everything else about the modern game and you are left with who wants it more. The greatest players have always been truly gifted athletes, but what sets them apart is their drive, determination, and willingness to do whatever it takes. Those qualities translate to any era.

  Yeah, it has to be by position. But Walter Payton, Jim Brown and Jerry Rice are all good choices. So are Barry Sanders, Reggie White, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Emmit Smith, etc.

  Sanders would've set some records if he had stayed in the NFL. He made defenses look stupid.

  I'm a diehard, old school Niner fan, and I love Steve Young, but he doesn't belong with Marino, Aikman, Bradshaw, Fouts, Manning, etc. To me, Young was very good but not great. Montana, on the other hand, was great!
