Not a guy (sorry), but sometimes stopping child support can be viewed as a poor choice on your part (in the states you can be jailed for it). You need to do everything you're supposed to do so that the judge/mediator/whatever sees that you are a responsible parent. It demonstrates your ability to care for your girls in the eyes of the court. It also puts your spouse in a poor view if she isn't keeping up her part of the responsibilitites. I do speak from experience and it has been a long road for me.

I think his ex made a poor choice ! (from what we being told about the story)
My suggestion was only a reaction to a poor choice .

Damn if you do , damn if you don't ! A father who don't want to take care of his kids , the society throw rocks at him ... While the one that wants to,get spit on ... Pffff

Sorry to get emotional , it's a sensitive subject to me !
