When your quietly watching a tv show them a commercial comes on all loud. Ought to be a law

A couple of yrs ago congress passed a law saying it was illegal. I thought all the major networks were on board?

I hate that! I also hate it when certain channels are louder than others. I try to have my tv quiet, so I don't wake everyone up, but I flip and the new channel is 5 times louder than the other ones.

They do that on purpose. After watching some TV that probably was interesting(why would you be watching if not?) the commercials would be hard pressed to catch your attention.
So there solution was to catch you by surprise, which would generally make you start absorbing all the information. This actually works.
However, almost all advertisements do this, so it has lost it's affect. Bright colors, contrast, loud volume, huge special effects. A while ago, a commercial could be quiet, subtle, and still be interesting. Now, people have copied other commercials, making them all the same.

The ads are compressed, then the gain is boosted, to sound louder.

It is very annoying
