My dog is in the ER. 😢🏥
Forums › General Discussion › My dog is in the ER. 😢🏥-
Me and my two Housemates and longtime friends were watching tv and he was fine lying on the floor until he tried to stand up and was unable to and kept falling down. We're up and University of penn bet now. He started acting strange and his right eye was moving eratically. And he kept darting his head about. Almost like a stroke? He's back with the docs. Fingers crossed. Wish him luck please.

Hope he is ok Good luck

I am real sorry Davey. Did he stay that way or come back to normal a few minutes later. One of my dogs has seizures occasionally. Everything u said reminds me of her seizures but they only last a few minutes and she's back to normal 5-10 minutes later

Many thanks to all. In answer to TW'er we waited some 25 minutes and he didn't get any better. He has trouble standing and walking and his right eye was twitching from side to side and his head kept darting right. No word yet. But again thank you all for your prayers and wishes.
-
Fingers crossed. You must be out of your mind with worry-- I hope the vet has good news.

Thanks again to all! Snoopy is good!!!! I'll update y'all with the specific details but I'm off to head home to bed with my dog! Thanks again to all!

Vestibular Syndrome
There is a syndrome, variously referred to as peripheral vestibular syndrome (the current "preferred name"), geriatric vestibular syndrome and idiopathic vestibular syndrome. This disorder is more common in older dogs and thus the name geriatric vestibular syndrome -- but it can occur in middle aged dogs, too, so the name was changed. Idiopathic just means "happens for no known cause" -- so it is a good name but not the preferred one. It does sum up the situation well, though. For some reason dogs can suddenly develop vestibular disease. The problem seems to be due to inflammation in the nerves connecting the inner ear to the cerebellum (which controls balance and spatial orientation). It usually lasts between a couple of days and three weeks. A few dogs have residual signs beyond this time, such as a head tilt. This disease normally affects dogs that seem normal up until the signs appear.
-
Then there is sudden loss of balance with many dogs unable to even stand up. Rythmic eye motion known as nystagmus is usually present. Dogs may be nauseous from the "sea sickness" effect of vestibular disease. Most dogs will not eat or drink unless hand fed or given water by hand because they have a hard time with the fine motor movements necessary to eat or drink from a bowl. As long as they are nursed through this condition almost all dogs will recover. There is no known treatment. Some dogs do have relapses but most do not.

Glad it's a temporary thing and your dog will recover. It must be so very frightening for them, not knowing what is happening to themselves.

I'm a huge dog lover, owned em all my life. Never easy to see your friend suffer. Hope all goes well 🙏🐶

Yeah. That was the worst part. He looked so scared and clueless as to what was happening. We're keeping an eye on him closely the next few days. Many thanks for all the best wishes. Dogs become more than pets. They become human members of the family. And are truely loyal.Glad it's a temporary thing and your dog will recover. I had the same thing happen to my cockapoo when he was about a year old. Mostly happens with dogs that have ears that are covered. What had happened was he had been running around in the grass and you know that type that if you run thru a dry field will stick to your socks or pants. Well one of them had gotten in and had been lodge deep inside his eardrum. Luckily the vet caught it in time. Before it could have done serious damage and he would have remained with a tilted head for the rest of his life. The side affect only lasted a day and since has lived a normal life. Glad to hear that your dog is doing much better and will recover.

I was gonna say vistibular syndrome too. Aka old dog diesease . My old girl Hanna has it. She had her first stroke about 3 years ago, didn't think she was gonna get back to normal. Took about a year and her head doesn't tilt anymore. She's had a few of them, the first was the worst. Good luck man. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your dog

I hope your dog is okay.
My best friend passed away earlier this year and I know how hard it is. I gave my pal intervenious fluids two or three hours each day for a year. He suffered with valley fever with complications that led to kidney failure. We did at home euthanasia. This was amazing. I did not want him to pass in a clinic. The doctor came to our house at ten pm and hung out for several hours before going through with end of life care. We had done everything possible to give him a great life. He had a great life. I wanted him to have a good death. He did.
I think of him quite a bit. I would have never met my wife without him. I am tearing up typing this. Lol. He was a hell of a dog.

I too am a animal lover. They become freinds and family. How many times have you had a particularly hard day and came home to hug that furry little beast and find life a little better. I know I have.

That's great news Davey, I'm glad to hear the lil guy will bounce back. Anyone that knows me also knows I may not like people but there isn't a dog in the world I wouldn't go far out of my way to help. My two are far beyond pets, these are kids to the wife and I.
