Let's change the context. "Cars don't kill people, drivers do". That's just as correct, right? If cars didn't exist, we wouldn't have car accidents. That doesn't make the car the reason for the accidents - just an enabling means. Inattentive driving, alcohol, drugs, poor maintenance, and carelessness are much higher on the list of causes, but can't be blamed on the car. And just as most commutes DON'T result in a fatality, most gun owners don't kill anybody. The statement is certainly not without merit.

To elaborate more, people need to be held accountable for their actions. Guns are just one of many tools available to commit crimes. Human beings are responsible for their own actions. Blame the person using the gun inappropriately, not the gun itself.
I agree that people as well as guns should be blamed for crimes. After all, the person chose to use the gun, but guns made it possible to commit the crime.

Also without merit is the argument that killing someone with a gun is "easier." Depending on how you define easier...I am pretty sure if I meant to do it--which I don't--I'm probably more accurate and less likely to be caught with a suitable application of altered OJ. Now the operative words there are "less likely." Probably much less likely given that all OJ already comes with a silencer.
