Here's the deal.
If I attack you and I lose, I still get 3xp and you get 6xp.
If you then attack me back and I win, I get 6xp and you get 3xp.
Therefore for 1 stam each we are both 9 experience points better off.
Anyone with a similar mob to mine who attacks me six times and loses I will return the favour (as long as I have stam).

After 6/8 attacks xp starts to drop off.
This resets 24 hours later.
