What kind of knife should I get
Forums › General Discussion › What kind of knife should I get-
Thinking of buying myself a nice chefs knife. I was thinking henkels or wusthof. Maybe 8 or 9 inch. Maybe santoku, or European style. Maybe with scalloped edges. That is just what I was thinking, post your opinion below. I have no price range at all.

Umm. Depends is this for perparing meals or should I report you to a police departmant? Lol.

Well I'm 11 and I have cooked, a lot. Tonight I made onion, green pepper, salt, pepper, cholula hot sauce, sriracha, cumin, hot Hungarian paprika, cayenne, olive oil, chile flakes, and jalapeño marinated and grilled pork chops with the green peppers, onions, and jalapeno's that were in the marinade sauted in coconut oil served with oven fries seasoned with old bay, olive oil, grapeseed oil, salt, and pepper.⚡ADD➡TRUTH⚡ wrote:

You are like 13 right? What do you personally need to buy a knife for?

Look above, I cook, and need a nice knife. Me and my mom work as a team, she has her knife and I need one too. Know I'm using an 8" ceramic santoku that cost 8 dollars. She uses a 10" wustof. I need a nice knife too, and since we each do different things, we need two chefs knives. I do entrees, and all the prep work for them and my mom does desserts and apps. Me have a once a week dinner service where we stock up and m dad and sister have a choice of 2 apps, 2 entrees, and two desserts. You are like 13 right? What do you personally need to buy a knife for?

That's pretty impressive.
Why don't your parents buy you a knife instead of you having to buy one?

Butterfly knife just kiddin

Henkels is probobly better for a beginner. I like them both. Santoku are in style and while I use them I prefer the classic chef knife. At 11 you May opt for a 6 inch instead. Don't go over 8. Don't know why your mom uses a 10 standard as its not very good for 99% of standard home jobs
-
Reason i say Henkels for a beginner os they tend to hold the edge a little longer while whustof tend to take a little sharper edge if you know how to give it one. Japanese steel is the best but for most you need to mail it away to sharpen. Seriously I'd say either Henkels or whustof. Can't go wrong with either

firstly, congrats to you for taking such an interest in the kitchen and recognizing the importance of having a good, sharp knife.
I personally find western blades to be hot garbage. they're heavy, the blades too thick, they never seem to get sharp enough. but then again, I'm a professional and picky about those sorts of things. especially knowing you can get a good starter Japanese knife for the same price as a wustoff or henkle.
check out the knives at brooklynkitchen.com. kikuichi made blades for them. 8" knives are like $90. they maintain well and look cool. santokus are a western bastardization of traditional Japanese knives, but quite comfortable for pretty much 99% of home cooks needs.

also yeah, 10" wtf. I have some beater henkle ten incher I got for free. I pretty much only use it to hack at a wheel of hard cheese and to score the homemade butterfingers I make while they're cooling on a sheet tray. actually I got a whole set of henkles from Hk and I think so poorly of them, they mostly live on my fridge and I'd even mail you one if you weren't so young and your mom would probably think it's creepy some 30 year old broad from an iPhone game was sending her kid knives in the mail.

poo it's thebrooklynkitchen.com but they no longer carry the knife I was talking about.
for a real wet dream, go to korin.com. plus they have pretty sweet deals on "gift sets" like, a santoku or gyutou and a petty for under $200 from fabulous makers like suisin and togiharu. that's pretty much the only knives I use all day every day.
