MEGA-tsunami from the Canary Islands
Forums › General Discussion › MEGA-tsunami from the Canary Islands-
I know this not very happy news but I'm super concerned about this:
"There is a potential for a devastatin g Tsunami on the East Coast of the United States, having its genesis in the Canary Islands. If this event were to take place, it would devastate vast areas of the East Coast of America. According to experts, it’s not a question of IF this occurs, but WHEN…" -
"However, the western half of the volcano has an approximate volume of 500 km3 (5 x 1011 m3) and an estimated mass of 1.5 x 1015 kg. If it were to catastrophically slide into the ocean, it could generate a wave with an initial height of about 1,000 metres (3,281 ft) at the island, and a likely height of around 50 metres (164 ft) at the Caribbean and the Eastern North American seaboard when it runs ashore eight or more hours later."

I saw a show about it, scary stuff!!

How can they predict a tsunami? Also is there even a fault line by the canary islands?
-
Hmmm. 50 meters. Maybe at it's worst. The bahama islands will protect us.

What about northeast?

That too?

The last time this same scare made the circuit was 2004. Back then studies showed that it was unlikely the collapse would be in one piece since the collapses tend to shear off in smaller pieces...made good scare documentaries though :) ... And I doubt the barrier islands would even slow down a 150 foot wave...the shelf drops off fast off the coast of Florida...would be a lot of water mass behind such a wave...interesting to hear what scientists predict it would be like though...my house in Florida is 7 feet above sea level.

I think I'd be more worried about the west coast of the united states. There is supposed to be a huge tsunami any time because it has been so long since the last one.

I remember the tsunami in Indonesia, alot of ppl were just standing there looking at the wave coming. They say that if the volcano breaks (slides) into the westside of the ocean quickly, then it would cause wave. But hopefully if it slides nice and slow then I guess not much to worry. I don't want a 150ft wave coming to me. I basically live minutes away from the coast (NYC) And it will start at 2 to 3 thousand ft and by the time it gets here 150 ftThe last time this same scare made the circuit was 2004. The thing is, nobody can predict when this tsunami would happen. So it could happen in 200 years. Or it could happen tomorrow, nobody knows. For that reason, it makes no sense to worry about it.
