It could be the end of turf wars...😱

Most of the signs are pointing towards the possibility of another maunder minimum. So flare problems may soon be a non issue for a good while.

Well isn't this the darndest thing. I was on a camping trip with a few buds last night and one of em said he saw what looked heat lightning in the distance, it was cloudy however so the rest of us didn't see, so it could've been the auroras he saw in reality.

Only read first few posts so may be asking something already said, but is there any chance it could have been tonight? About 11.20pm UK time my brother was pointing out to me what he thought was the edge of the milky way. It was like a faint White haze in the sky almost like a thin cloud... But in the stars... Could be miles off but seemed coincidental to me.

Isn't the theory of 2012 that we get hit by a solar flare which acts like a emp destroy life as we know it?

Destroying***

I'd say a better theory of 2012, is that there are muppets who will believe anything
-
Another theory is that people refuse to have a open mind ;D
I was just saying. And the solar flares right now are rather pointing towards it -

Why does a solar flare, in the wrong year, as solar cycle activity is lessening, add weight to some half baked end of the world fantasy? -

Because the theory is that a solar flare wipes out electrical devices end the world as we know it. The predicted a solar flare might happen in 2012 that's big enough to do it.Superyan wrote:

Once again, it's a theory. Just something to think about. It isn't the end of the world. It's the end of life as we know it. -
I bet you worry about the coming of the great White handkerchief too.
A quick perusal of the 2012 'theories' and I am assured in my position that they are a load of arse squitter.
Who is predicting this solar flare? NASA are predicting the opposite, I just checked.
And again, a flare happening in the wrong year does not lend weight to another killing all electrical items next year. It just doesn't. -
It's more than one, there is plenty documented evidence on the sun comming to the end of it's 11 year cycle, (solar maximum) this has been documented and recorded since 1859. When checking NASA web site use geomagnetic storm as a starting point for searching, there's plenty there and none of it DOOMSDAY related!

As in the theory was only really made to explain the theory of a doomsdays based on a Mayan calendar. To me a theory on a theory amounts to bsSuperyan wrote:

You really have no understanding of the topic in hand or the implications of a big solar storm hitting earth, and that's ok, if it doesn't inert you I wouldn't expect you to have knowledge. But don't patronise others. I didnt create this thread for discussion. I done it to share my interest in astronomy with other like-minded people.I bet you worry about the coming of the great White handkerchief too.

And the theory is a cme will erupt in the direction of earth, like the 1 2 days ago but be strong enough to act as an EMP. This effectively destroys any form of electrical comms on earth, including our sats. It don't necessarily mean it'll affect the entire planet, but there is a chance. It's something very real. And it's not just documented by NASA, but by many scientists, facilities and countries.

It happened 100 years ago but didn't effect us as much as of our lack of electrical devices. Some say we a due for it to happen again? Slugboy, I'm just stating a theory, if it doesn't happen. It doesn't happen.
Belial, a theory among a theory probably isn't a good thing to believe in so point to you there. -
I know well the affect a Solar flare would have, I studied environmental earth science in uni, And you didn't mention the potential damage to the powergrid ;), I'm disputing that one happening now adds up to proof that one will happen next year. And NASA has pointed to cycle 24 running late, so if we did get a large disruptive flare. It's much less likely to be next year.

I'm tired of hearing about theorys there was a theory that you could make a burger with a doughnut instead of a bun and last year it became true at the Kentucky state fair. Thsate was a theory that the world would end in 2000 and that didn't come true theorys are just that theorys nobody knows if they can come true or not some are just S.W.A.G. ( scientific wild ass guesses) gone wild.
