Well I'm tired of getting into arguments with wannabe jar-heads... Lets take a vote Oorah or Hoora? Im certian it's Oorah

I've heard, seen & despised both.

Hu?

well as with many words and expression this might come from France and Europe.
- The first origin is (Hou-ra) which was the battle cry of Cosaques or russian troops going towards an enemy
- The second origin is British Navy in honor of their Comanders or anybody higher grade
- The third is French Fishermen and French Navy at the time where they still had ropes that groups of people would pull together. First syllable to get ready to pull and second as you are pulling.
- The last and more modern origin I know about France is that the term is used more as an exclamation of joie of something accomplished. The Army says Hooah, the Navy says Oorah and the air force say Hooyah
I believe the American terms only came into common use in the last 60 years only...but the origin is clearly European
-
I used to be in 3d ACR (army) and we would say ih-ee-ah! Native American battle cry. The only unit that does not use hooah. ... That I know of..
