Didn't know of him, but it's always sad when a sports hero dies. (I guess it's sad when anybody dies, but you know what I mean)

He fought Muhammad Ali (Cassius clay back then) just before Ali fought sonny Liston and took the world title. One of only 4 fighters to knock down Ali. Was famous for his left hook 'Enry's 'ammer.Didn't know of him, but it's always sad when a sports hero dies. (I guess it's sad when anybody dies, but you know what I mean)
His first fight with Ali is considered controversial due to the 'torn glove' incident after the knockdown as Ali went on to win the fight due to the extra time needed in between rounds to get Ali a replacement glove.
He did a little better in the rematch after Ali was champion but again lost on cuts.

1. young Ali (before the ban) when he was all speedy footwork and agility.
2. Margin Hagler. True warrior. Crap manager so he had to fight the toughest guys in his class early on when he should have just been fed journeymen.
3. Any Mexican fighter out there at the at the moment 😋. -

Must admit Hearns v Hagler a classic
-
Marvin hagler....u know what glad u said that I almost overlooked him, yeah thinking about it ur 100% right about that, his management didnt do well by him really! Why is it that the Mexicans are such good fighters? I'd admit I'd rather watch a amateur welterweight/bantom/fly Mexican fight than 99% of the heavys nowadays ,always good fights...

And who could forget jack Johnson. First black heavyweight. Brilliant defensively and worked well as both an aggressor and is still considered one of the best counter punchers out there.
Extremely overlooked due to the social circumstances at the time and his likeness for White women and so disliked by "the establishment" (blame "The Man" lol), that he was stitched up for "violating" the Mann Act and had to flee the country.
-
For current day I'd say "pacman"manny (paquaio?)
"mayweather" (floyd) even tho think he an arrogant bastard I cnt deny he is v good
"hatton" although he may not be the best he has soooo much heart and is brilliant fighter n top bloke. As for my all time favourite...."jack Dempsey" "Ali" "and either Joe Louis or Marciano ? I love Tyson b4 his passed he was on track to be up there with them guys, and still can't take away his tenaciousness but the control he lacked, also he wasn't given much in way of competition really untill was too late -
Sugar ray aswell, was the first real show boat and ladies man, and he had some real condensers aswell and definitely earned his place...haggler tho, geez I forgot about Marvin, wanna go and watch some his fights now, don't remember terrible lot about him

I think I saw a film about johnsons life actually...maybe it wasn't about him but they used the circumstances...but def remember a boxing film where basically his extra curricular activities got him in all sorts of trouble...jealousy is what comes down to

The sugar ray and Jake la motta battles of old. Ray was all rhythm and tough as nails. Naturally a middleweight but fought (and won) every class up to light heavyweight (and lost 😳).
His only fault was that as he was tough as hell he was always being hit when he shouldn't have been getting hit (know what I mean 'arry?).
And yeah the pacman is great.

@krazijay - yeah Tyson would have been one of the greats if Cus D'Amato had lived longer. I think he was the only man Tyson had respect for.

Yeah definitely, I still had some admiration for Tyson even tho he went off rails,as I understand what being brought up in certain environments n condition can do to mans psyche, but when he bit holyfields ear(another good fighter) I lost my respect even if Holyfield did wind him up,and he shouldn't of complained If he did,it's like smacking a lion n expecting not get eaten! But that day I just felt sorry for him rather than admired him, although saw an interview not too long ago,he is more self reflective and intelligent than most give him credit for!@krazijay - yeah Tyson would have been one of the greats if Cus D'Amato had lived longer. Just read up about jack Johnson....he was underwater for 10 years straight or even sluggishly longer...wow, and for him being a black guy in those days I bet it was twice as hard, and bet they tried every trick(dirty and clean) to bring him down..I can imagine though with all the hate against him, that he made a point of show boating with the ladies(White especially, lol) that liked him, damn if I was being hated for no reason other than skin I would, good luck to him
-
Serious question though....why do u think it is that we don't produce heavyweights like we used to? I know it takes a lifetime(generation) untill most are appreciated, but still can't argue that u KNEW outright with the guys we talking about that they were true champs, not just best of who's about at moment! I mean david haye, I like him and he is good but wouldn't stand a chance with these guys imo, why don't we get heavys like we used to?

Sluggishly-slightly -
Two main reasons. The first is that society is not as tough in many ways as it was back then. Boxing is a profession of the under privileged.
Secondly, any decent prospect is usually snapped up and funnelled into basketball where there is more money, less physical duress and the physical attributes required for both sports are very similar.
-
Yeah valid points, also as zraygo said ufc has take over in ratings, never crossed my mind agents/scouts snapping up athletes for basketball(or other sports presumably baseball too) instead, what about the uk tho, it's still a "tradition" for want of better word,to box and also other q is why does Mexico deliver sooo many good light/bantam/fly and middle weight boxers? I get a funny image in my head of boxers with Cuban cigars scuffing,
-
What I think will prob happen is as more n more ppl turn to ufc I reckon eastern European n Russian boxers will dominate(as there seem to be some good eastern euro fighters) the sport, what ya reckon? Boxing is a true gents sport
