I also live in TN and there was tons of devastation around here. It's very possible that he doesn't have electricity, Internet, or cell service. Verizon alone had over 70 cell towers down in just the Chattanooga area.

Is it common occurrence for storms/tornadoes to wipe out power? And I'm guessing that generator sales are pretty good wherever there are such tornadoes?

Where are you from? Storms as bad as this past week commonly knock out power but those storms were uncommonly bad.
