Cops and robbers

I recently got a xbox with black ops.I enjoy online but I have no clue when it comes to cops and robbers due to my friends being idiots and not bothering to tell me how to play and then moaning when I mess it up.the way me and my friends play it as far as I can understand is that one guys a cop rest are robbers.cop has shotgun.robbers have knifes.robbers run away.cop finds them and try's to kill them.robbers try to knife cop without being killed.I though this was all there was too it but my friends keep saying I don't know what in doing and keep telling the cop where I Am so I keep getting killed.have I hot it right or is there more to it.please explain
