I live in uk, we had a very very minor one not too long ago,but I must be honest I never felt a thing. I can't imagine the fear or terror of experiencing nature like that, yes I've seen videos etc,I know quite few places in USA have quakes quite regular really, and also storms and tsunamis typhoons? I guess I've been lucky in that sense that born in uk and never had to worry about these things before

Meh. Quakes aren't that scary. You learn to live with them.

Yes I understand that,I mean especially japan look a their architecture, wow? It's cutting edge for earthquakes, but earthquakes like this u can't lean to live with, well can't stop it but I mean it's not something that u would overlook? What is an average size earthquake? One that u feel but just go abou daily business?Meh. Quakes aren't that scary. You learn to live with them.

Eh, usually, I guess I'd say about 4.0+. They're usually pretty short by the time they get to me, like 30 seconds or less. If they're in the middle of the night, I almost always sleep through them.
-
You mean the GREAT Dudley quake krazyjay?
-
I've been through a bad one in a third world country, one of the worst experiences of my life.

It's THE BIG ONE!!!

Saw the aftermath in Seattle in 2001, small one but still crazy to see.
-
Experience them every so often in California... Small ones are kinda fun. Big ones can get a lil scary, but nothing too big in so cal in my area.
-
We had a minor one in Manchester In the uk in 1990. It caused a few houses to become structualy unsafe.

Only on that ride at Universal Studios, the Bart train thing.
Never been in a legitimate earthquake.

first one i ever experienced was in the middle of the night. i woke up enough to think "that damn garbage truck!"... and then I remembered that I was in a tent, 20 miles from the nearest road in the high Sierras. It wasn't a big one, but I was pretty f-ing impressed to realize that something had sufficient energy to be able to move that entire mountain range... have been through lots more since, but that one remains the most memorable. yesterday's action in Japan really worries me: it relieved a huge amount of stress on that portion of the plate -- it only stands to reason that that will transfer the stress around the rim.. Coupled with the recent huge quake on the South American portion leads me to be more certain that the West Coast of the US is ever closer to its due date with its next really big one....

I was in Scotts Valley California, about 10 miles off the Loma Prieta epicenter, during the quake of October 89. It was only a 6.9 but one the scarriest thing I ever experienced, probably the longuest 20 seconds of my life at the time. I was on the second floor, holding on the walls, looking at the falling ceilling tiles and the fire emergency water pipes breaking up pouring water everywhere. There was a river of water falling down the stair on our way out the building. Santa Cruz was hit hard, the downtown had a lot of brick building that just crambled under the stress. With all the aftershocks, I remember sleeping outside that night.

The last big quake I remember experiencing was the northridge 6.6 . I was asleep and woke and ran to the livingoom with everyone else, after standing in the doorway.
Then the other 1989...or 1988 I forgot, it was 7.0 scared the he'll out of me since I was like 7 or 8 I hugged my mom trying to walk while the house was jumping. It felt like someone was lifting my bed and dropping it. That was the first big quake I remember. Anything I between wasn't much to mention or remember.
All in California -
I was living on Treasure Island back when the '89 earthquake hit S.F.
-
Lol. Growing up in California you get used to them. 1st big one I remember was in San Fernando in the 60's that was 6.7 or 8. My Dad was just leaving for work and ran in and scooped me out of bed and ran out side. That night everytime he got me in to bed another aftershock would hit and I was up and in the living room on his lap again☺.
Now, if I even wake up, as soon as I realize it's like oh just a quake and right back to sleep.
But, at almost a 9 that is about 3000x stronger than a 6.0+ that we are used to in CA. Saying it lasted over 5 min!! They've had about 30 aftershocks that are over 6!!!
Been a while since we've had a good one on the west coast too😏. -

exactly lol surprisenly ppl in SD have far much more fear in their reactions to earthquakes than ppl in LA weird funny and true. Perfect example the one from Easter I coulndt stop laughin cuz I was watching the parked cars hit eachother. Then I go to school n everyones talkin about how scared they were n I even saw some ppl crying 😒 pathetic... I was asked so many times if Im ok it's a earthquake get over it there's alot happening. Most of the time we don't even feel them.Meh. Quakes aren't that scary. You learn to live with them.
But yea Krazijay
come to LA n you'll feel one 😏 promise lmao -
I love earthquakes. When I was younger there was one I'm not sure how strong it was but it was strong cuz it took everyone by surprise n it was on newyears eve I believe n it broke a tv n a few pictures hanging from the wall my bed moved (cheap shit lol) n I slept through the whole thing.
My favorite things about them is the aftershock You can sit on the floor n enjoy the motions then your all sad when it's done then it starts up again 😄
-
They might be fun until someone get killed. I don't think the people that were driving on the Cypress Freeway in '89 love it. Especially when the aftershocks keep crushing them under tons of concrete.
-
The only earthquake ive ever experienced was on the last day if school. I fell out of my desk lol
-
I've only experienced one. it was last may, I believe an aftershock from the Easter quake. It def wasn't what I expected and freaked me out a lil
-
Lots of little ones, mostly when i'm in Cali. But I felt a couple in Peru back in 2005. Woke up and the room was shaking.
My dad was in Peru a couple years after that and felt an 8.8, he said the driveway was rolling like waves. -
Was in one in California on a trip in the eighties that scared me to death for some reason. In a second one in Tokyo in 2001 that was a small five pointer. Building was on rollers so basically all that happened was the bed rolled across the room...

I've been in a proper hurricane in the carribean in the mid 90's , was propbably nothing, although there was warning that went out to whole eastern carribean I believe. It was real scary for someone who live in a country where we get gale force winds ands that about it,the feeling of terror that came over me,we are at natures mercy

My first earthquake was a 5.4 when I lived outside of Seattle. I was in 7th grade and it scared the sh!t out of me. I was freaked out cause my dad was in Cali on a business trip. My mom wasn't answering her phone and my sister was out for the night. Once I calmed down I was okay with everything.
There was an aftershock after I'd gone to bed. It woke me up but I went right back to sleep when I realized what it was. -
I've never been in one. I don't think I'd like them; I prefer the earth under my feet to be (relatively) stable.
I can't begin to imagine an 8.9! They said it was the 6th strongest earthquake in history (anywhere, not just Japan). Attrition & I watched some of the video online. :( My heart goes out to everyone in Japan.

I was just reminded by my wife that one of our friends in the navy is stationed in japan. We are hoping he is okay.
