U learn about how to express yourself.I'm sorry, but why do we consider contemporary fiction to be educational?
If you are reading college textbooks or perhaps a biography or the history Rome, ok, that's educational.
Harry Potter???
I had a physics teacher a while back who made an interesting point. He said your intelligence isn't based on your ability to think.
It's based on your ability to convey those thoughts to other people. -
Anybody heard of Bernard Cornwell

American gods. Stephen Kings Dark Tower. Pretty much anything written by Timothy Findley. Anyone familiar with these authors? (aside from Stephen king obviously - I real only like his work with the dark tower) -

It's based on your ability to convey those thoughts to other people.I don't buy it. I've read maybe 10 works of fiction in my life, most of them in my 30s. 5 of those were HHGTTG.
Intelligence exists without communication. It's simply the ability to absorb information and apply it in creative ways. That can happen on a deserted island with no books around at all.
The ability to communicate well is only a symptom of intelligence. And, I see little link between reading Harry Potter and being able to play a good game of non-verbal chess.

Like a real book?? Nobody reads those artifacts anymore!! Lol

Yes I read, theirs nothing like the smell of a brand new book! My mum is a huge reader a book every other day in most causes, our house is like a library! So Ive always had access to a wide variety of books :) my favourite when I was in school was mythology and folktale kinda story's, now I'm into crime/horrors :)

La Piccolina, if you are talking about Clive Cussler, he is one of my favorites. I think his best books are any of those considered "The Oregon Files". If you enjoy Cussler, you would probably like anything by James Rollins as well.

I use to quite often. My dad really got me into the Xanth series (fantasy/magic), ender's game, 1984, brave new world, etc etc etc. Now between work, gf, school, and turf wars, no time..

Absolutely not. I'm serious. Reading a lot does not make someone intelligent as Troggy's teacher insists. Even college textbooks can't do that. My adopted Father has a heart of gold, and he reads constantly. (even Harry Potter). Books everywhere, all fiction. I love him, but the man is an idiot. It has always bothered me that because I don't read the paper on the train, or the latest pulp fiction, I'm not an intellectual. The evidence is here in this thread... Reading makes people smart, or if you want to be smart, you have to read. It's complete bullshit. Just like in Troggy's case, it's the educators... The self-titled intellectual elite... -that push that crap on everyone.
I'm serious.

The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime is my favorite book ever!! Prefer to read music though tells a better story.

@ brown note
His point was that the ability to transfer your theories and what u learnt to another human is what made us advance as a social group and as a species. This was a physics teacher, when he comes up with a theory he has to prove it, by writing it up, detailing what he did, and other physicists will read it and test his theory
Lots of animals have learnt great tricks. But their inability to "teach" other animals through communication has left their knowledge stuck in their heads and the species unable to advance.
Harry potter by it self will not make u smarter. But it's not gonna make u dumber , you will learn literary devices, u will become better at describing things and you will learn to communicate better.
This comes from reading lots of books from various authors. -
Have well over 2000 books. Mostly paperback mysteries, although starting with a LOT on various iPhone formats😺.
Lol! My mom had me reading and signing my own books out at the library before I even started school!! -
Troggy,
Harry Potter will sap intelligence, just as watching daytime TV will.
Saying intelligence is dependent on communicative abilities is just wrong.
Reading books makes people smart like borrowing your boss' Mercedes makes you wealthy and a better driver.
Reading won't make you more intelligent. Intelligent people tend to read books, but it's not causative.
You may gain knowledge from reading books with truth in them, but your natural ability to process and use that knowledge, in other words your intelligence, is not improved by being anti-socially burried in a novel.
