something has died in the walls
Forums › General Discussion › something has died in the walls-
I think. that death smell keeps radiating in wafts from this one wall that the couch is up against and the kitchen where the pot rack and refrigerator are up against. it's not under something. I'm pretty sure it in the wall or the floor. this is an old house.
it's faint, it's not like the whole apartment reaks of death and decay. but I don't know what the next course of action to take.
if I leave it alone will it just dry up and go away? should I call the super? I dunno what he's gonna do about it. help!

🐹🐭🐹🐭🐰🐹🐭 vs. 🐱🐱🐱
if my semi useless cats had defeated it, they would have brought it to me as a gift. but they're more likely to injure them critically and leave them to scurry to the walls to die.

Dead mouse???
Or did your kitty get stuck in the wall!!!!
Call the super, u pay him, it's his problem to solve -
It's definately a dead animal in the wall... Gonna cost a fortune to open the wall up😵 call the exterminators, you know that reality show of those guys in tennasee?...crazy show...

Is big hank decaying in the Walls?
-
JMac's not pulling a John Wayne Gacy, is he?
-
I had the same problem, bought a crowbar and ripped every wall apart, nothing, all I see is that damn cat, lying in the diver, with a smile in his chops

it's not my house. I mean, if it's a mouse it's gonna stink but will eventually stop smelling right?
all my cats are accounted for.
-
I should do, may take a while though!
-
No, even AFTER the carcass molds away and leaves just bones I'd assume the smell would stick onto the walls
Go crazy with a can or two of fabreeze?

I know when we moved in there were some glue traps in the closet but I'm not squeamish about mice as long as they're not all over the place. about 7 months later when I pulled out an electric radiator the old tenants left in the closet, in a small poof of dust, a dried non stinky little mouse corpse fell out. it must have died before we moved in, I have a sensitive nose. but I assume stink stays as long as there's still moisture in the carrion.
-
True... But perhaps the scent could move into the wall which is of a different material... Most of the time mice leave once they know a cat is present and usually do not venture back. Maybe an animal got cocky and tried to venture in in spite of your cats.

they only smell for about a week, then they turn to raisins, bodies take about a 2 month
-
for instance,I have some food smell in my cupboard, for about two weeks now.what is it?all in dry foods cupboard, before long,I will find those leetle stinking raisins.I just use a clothes peg in the meantime
-
there's a small hole in the floor and a divet in the wall where an ancient landline socket exists. I couldn't smell anything in there either. maybe it's coming from the ceiling.
I can deal with a week of stink smell. it's already fainter than it was a couple days ago. it's just I have glaucoma and mediocre hearing but my olfactory is something to behold.

shoulda been a perfumer or a vintner. sometimes I tell perfect strangers what cologne they're wearing. it's creepy yet impressive. I could also tell when my boyf was hanging with other bitches.
-
Hannibal/perfume.how attractive would someone have to be,to have trapped food in biscupids, rat in me bathroom,Loewe underarm,Jason Steatham skills, and a body like the White whale, that smells like money?
-
I'm ready
-
The hole is where they entered, not where they are... of course you can get used to almost ANY smell, I had a sensitive nose until I fell on it running up the stairs giving me a permanent snout/nose and half clogging my nose...
Also, just because you cant smell it anymore doesn't mean it's gone,..it's an embarresment when you have guests over.
-
smells like a baby that has eaten what mama has given and shit myself.big smile
-
If it's a dead mouse, the moisture will leak out of it and evaporate. If it's dry behind the wall. If it's damp, it'll rot and liquify, making a stink.
Get the super to have a look, it might be a bit of rib or your sticky wings under/behind the fridge. -
Take a shower. Dirty hippie
-
carrion, nice word MT.

I had an occasional death smell in my foyer. Mostly in the summer.
Turns out it was burning grease rubber and plastic in my breaker box, and the gasses came out of a nearby vent. Summer because the AC breaker was the culprit.
Eventually there was a full-blown fire. We replaced the bus bar and breakers.
The dead rat was gone for good.

Leaving dead animals can create toxic gases as they decompose and prolonged exposure can lead to sleeplessness, headaches, and worse. Definitely make sure to have it removed. If the smell is faint now, the problem is already worse than you think.
-
I don't think this is a case of animal(s). it's not like there's a stockpile of carcasses in the walls. how disgusting do you think I am!?
I know the house has had mice. I've never seen one darting about but I have seen mouse traps in the basement and some droppings (old) when we first moved into the apt.
-
Well dry wall doesn't hold smells so if it is a mouse or something that died once it stops stinkin you won't smell it anymore lol

That would take a crap load of mice. A larger animal, like a squirrel or something...they usually scrabble around a bunch before giving up the ghost. Annoying. And very noticeable. Super should look anyway in case there is a way larger animals (mouse-eaters or God forbid squirrels) could get in and get stuck. Those suckers will make you go at the wall with a pick axe in the wee hours. If it's only noticeable in certain areas..probably a mouse. It'll go away most likely.Leaving dead animals can create toxic gases as they decompose and prolonged exposure can lead to sleeplessness, headaches, and worse.
