My apologies. By off the shore of Somalia I meant those vessels that are on the edge of somalian waters and the ones in the international waters. Those that are considerably less likely to be anything but pirates.Make up your mind bugsy. Earlier you said the navy should hit anything off the shore of Somalia, now your saying anything in the wake of a vessel?
The other choice is for a crew of mercs to be put on each ship. Then when some pirates try to board, they have to fight people trained at that kinda stuff. That would be cheaper than paying the millions in ransom for a ship and its crew. Also be considerably less traumatic for the crew. Thanks to the money grubbers for scratching this so they can gamble with wether or not the ship is hijacked. -
Just to clear up my position on this debate, I actually gree with you to some extent bugsy. I work for a major Japanese shipping line in the London, so I'm affected by this stuff daily. I'd love to see a more stern policy taken to piracy, but you can't just make it as simple as shoot on site. It wouldn't be acceptable in the UK or USA so why should it be acceptable abroad? Isee what your saying abt taking out pirates chasing vessels, but just like at home, you need evidence to prosecute an quite honestly as soon as the pirates meet any form of resistance they know fool well their time is counting down until a military chopper arrives, so they dump the weapons in the sea. There's your evidence gone. So what do you do? Execute the seemingly inicent people on the skiff? There would be international out rage!

Also rearding the lawlessness in countries such as Somalia and sierras leone etc, 'we' can't really complain as no doubt it was probably our governments that were selling arms to the rebels that made the coutries what they are. But that's another discussion! Lol

Well our governments don't produce ak47's which is the rifle of choice...alot of it is excess soviet arms built up durning the cold war. As I said before some ship do take on mercs. They asked for a lift o Kenya after they escorted a ship to Somalia. They came on board and said "we can't bring these to Kenya (and held up thier ak's). Want them?". Our boarding team wad like "hell ya!" CO obviously shit canner it...plop plop 5 ak's in the drink. They just threw themAlso rearding the lawlessness in countries such as Somalia and sierras leone etc, 'we' can't really complain as no doubt it was probably our governments that were selling arms to the rebels that made the coutries what they are. Over the side. I can't remember but I believe I hear the average cost for an ak in Africa is around 10$ American. -

Actually, I believe it is as easy as shoot on site. I know when I was deployed to Iraq, possession of an RPG by anyone not IA or IP was definitely shoot on site. Why not in international waters where piracy is the main occupation? What the hell does a fisherman need an RPG for? Are the tuna sporting Minis and body armor?Just to clear up my position on this debate, I actually gree with you to some extent bugsy. I first of all am as pissed off as the rest of you but thing sound alot easier than they are to do, you bomb every ship that is a certain distance out in sea and the fishermen fish near the coast but soon enough those waters are over fished and then what? Fisherman can't feed their families and the us certainly isn't helping, they caused this situation after all. So now the fisherman look to who can feed them, those with money and influence and man power, warlords and pirates. Now you have a whole fucking nation fighting, and the fishermen fight to survive, nothing is more dangerous than a wounded wild animal backed into a corner right?

Did you hear about the somali pirates attacking the frigate

Disgusting. If everyone retaliated 10 fold for any attack made to them the entire world would be dead by now. It's a good thing more level headed individuals are in power and not you. Let's become terrorists so that we dont face terror ourselves. Ya that's the answer."Someone must bring their war to them. They bomb a church, we bomb ten. They hijack a plane, we take out an airport. They execute American tourists, we tactically nuke an entire city. Our job is to make terrorism so horrific that it becomes unthinkable to attack Americans." -Gabriel in Swordfish (2001)
Why not fight these pirates like this? This isn't just about Americans. The pirates aren't targeting any one nationality. If everyone hits this ass clowns hard as hell, They may get the picture that hijacking ships isn't such a good career.

Do you know how long Somalia has had active tribal warfare? They haven't had a government since '91. The govt was communist and collapsed after the end of the cold war. Since then, this wasteland has been doing what you claimed would happen if we take a hard line against piracy. I don't see how a hard line on piracy could force them into a state of chaos they are already in.I first of all am as pissed off as the rest of you but thing sound alot easier than they are to do, you bomb every ship that is a certain distance out in sea and the fishermen fish near the coast but soon enough those waters are over fished and then what? No just disgusted that he thinks killing innocent people isn't wrong. How could anyone ever be happy that hundreds of thousands of innocent people were killed in two singular acts. His jingoistic attitude is appalling. Just because some people are doing evil deeds does not mean it's right to kill everything that moves off the coast of Somalia. Provide aid for the innocent people don't just group them in with pirates and kill them for no reason. "they execute American tourists, we tactically nuke an entire city" that's the most fucked up thing ive ever read if he believes that. You don't go blowing the fuck out of innocent people when your target is just a handful of fucked up ones. I mean seriously. If everyone in the world thought like this we would be dead within days.
And brown in the 20 years in the future thread, I responded in there after reading this crap. So again I didn't mean to sound combatitive there. Sorry about that. -

Honestly I don't really follow somalli politics all that closely/often. But the mere fact that there are fishermen means that some people don't kill each other for a living, an I'm not talking about the chaos it would cause, I'm talking about the swell in manpower land and money that said pirates/warlords would get from that, I'm all for a hardline policy but that particular one will just make things more dificult.Do you know how long Somalia has had active tribal warfare? They haven't had a government since '91. The govt was communist and collapsed after the end of the cold war.
