Does influence help at all besides for money?

it works into the game.
there is a 10% rule, u can't cap someone who has less than 10% of your influence
and then it means more income....

Turf influence determines build range.

It also plays in a factor in cap range.

Ability to cap and be capped is also affected by influence.
