I am unfamiliar with Australian geography. is that first turf ever, Hamsterdam, protected from the storm?

By the way.... Katrina was small, compared to what everyone seems to think. It was an average sized storm by the time it hit land. Most of the "devastation" in NOLA (water, ooooo) was static flooding because a mud wall collapsed. It had nothing to do with the wind of the storm, and the water was mostly from a lake. A bunch of people living below sea level blaming a storm for their own infrastructural incompetence.
Hurricanes and cyclones are minor as natural disasters go, but I wish them luck anyway. It sucks when your house falls over, but if you are still in it, it's your own fault.

We're not self-absorbed for not knowing; our media is focusing on egypt right now.

I hope everyone there stays safe & isn't without necessities afterwards. The last major one to hit the Houston area was Ike (the one that basically destroyed Galveston). We lost power for 5 days. We were fortunate that that was all we lost & that it was cool for that time of year. I'll tell you though, listening to the winds as it roared through was extremely scary, even though I'm an adult & that's not the first hurricane I've been through. Attrition had to be at work & a friend that was staying with us was taking medication that made her sleep through the whole thing; so I was basically alone. Anyway, take care over there!

How many deaths were the result of the wind and rain of this category 3 (at landfall) storm? What difference does the size make when an average tornado has a magnitude more destructive power? Don't believe the hype. A hurricane is one step above a thunderstorm. I've been in many of them growing up in Florida. They are about zilch compared to a tsunami, a tornado, a medium earthquake, a wild fire, even a long heat wave. Idiot. Whatever.I smell shit in here. Brown must be speaking out of his ass.

Right now the Yasi death toll is... 000000
Wait! One 23 year-old died because he ran a gas generator in an enclosed space! DAMN YOU RAIN!!!!
Do we have perspective yet?

You are still an idiot. The destructive power of a hurricane by far out weighs the destructive power of a tornado. Wind, rain, flooding, surge waters etc. Katrina caused 81 billion dollars in damage and Katrina didn't just hit New Orleans. It destroyed homes on the coast of Mississippi too. NOLA just happened to be full of idiots and that is what the media focused on. Tell me one time that a tornado caused 81 BILLION dollars in damage. Im waiting Shit Note.Right now the Yasi death toll is... 000000

60 people in the US are killed by tornados every year on average. In 1925, a tornado in the central US killed 695 people. These are people killed by the storm itself, and not by stupidity, as in Katrina. The levy system was the killer. Fewer people were killed by Katrina than die in a single year of tornados.
"Destructive power" is insignificant when nobody gets hurt. Remember, tornados are much more frequent than hurricanes, live just fine inland, and pack double the wind speed. They also arrive without warning.
You are a tool of the sensationalistic media my friend. Deal with it.

Hurricanes/cyclones are common for Australia it's part of the season just like heavy rain/flooding is part of the season in india. I'm not sure if they've categorised Yari yet but I'd assume it's a cat 5. With an estimated $5b of destruction already caused it could well be the biggest on record, bigger than Tracy was.

*yasi, not yari.

Um nope it was cat 5 when it hit Between Mission Beach, Tully and Inisfail. Not hugely populated areas at all. I live in QLD and have visited all three spots. If the centre of this cyclone with wind peaks of 300km p/h winds hit Townsville or Cairns I would expect death toll and damage bill to be considerably higher..VADAN wrote:

Cyclone downgraded to Cat2 when it was um like 400ks inland. It managed to get as far inland as Alice Springs, you know? Where that big rock thing is? Look it up that's a massive track from when it first hit land...

Not cool man. Trust me, we cover world news and we empathize. We usually provide help in these situations too because we are so self absorbed. Instead of concentrating on only taking care of our own like so many other countries do. Ironic, knocking one group of people while giving good wishes to another.Qld, btw incase you are self absorbed American, Qld in Australia is about to get hammered by a 600mile wide hurricane/cyclone
