Apple can tell if it was water damaged, there are color change stickers that change when wet... They will know. However if you have a "smartphone medic" in your town they can repair it for appx $50.

There are little pieces o paper in the iPod that turn red if they ever get wet, apple states that the warranty will not cover water damage.
