If you would like to spread IRC use amongst turfwars players, turfwarswiki now has an IRC web client that points to #turfwarswiki through freenode.net. Feel free to point a bot at it, or initiate IRC awareness with it. Web clients lead to iPhone clients lead to desktop clients lead to more people to chat with.
If you want privacy, I also run a standalone SSL IRC server at turfwarswiki.com:9998

Sounds great man! I personally am an irc junkie myself. Will spread the word

What is irc? I only heard it mentioned for the first time yesterday.

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's an old school chat system. Rooms exist as long as they are occupied, and the room creator is the "operator". The operator can assign other operators to maintain ownership of the room. Many times, people point "bots" at rooms to hold them open. Bots are programs that pretend to be people in order to maintain operator status.

There are several IRC networks, based on slightly different versions or the ircd server. The servers in a network will route connections to the proper channel, or room, on the network. There are dozens of popular clients on just about every platform.

There is a slight learning curve to IRC, so it tends to be occupied by more tech-savvy types. There are dozens of commands to learn, people link it to SMS, perform botnet attacks to steal channels, lots of complex stuff that nobody wants to explain to new users. This is why AIM, MS, Yahoo, palringo, etc, are more popular... Any monkey can use them. 😉

Shhhhh... Don't wake him. He's had a long day laughing maniacally at his phone..

IRC wow that's kicking it old school. Remember the days when torrents didn't exist and IRC was used to d/l.

Good question robo, didn't want to ask, good explanation(in the first quote Brown), almost got a nose bleed on #2 & 3. One day I hope to be any monkey cause that fuckers got me beat on a few levels. Although I am pretty good at flinging poo, of the verbal nature at least.
-
People still use IRC for chat? I thought it was only for running a botnet. 😼
-
Thanks for explaining. I've never been to tech savvy. I'll stick with the palringo.
-
A lot of geek organizations use it for chat. For example, I got the web client from linuxjournal.com. It's their public chat room of choice. If you want to talk to any of the editors, they hang out there.
Of course, like anything else, it can be used for both good and evil.

Hell yeah!
