The potential of video games.
Forums › General Discussion › The potential of video games.-
Video games today serve the sole purpose of pretty much delivering entertainment. And that's great. Blowing shit up in CoD is a great time killer.
That's why it sells so much.
That's also why there's no more innovation in video games. The release of Halo 3 and CoD 4 were the beginning of the gaming market being watered down by shooters. A Solid majority of the "big" games that come out now are shooters.
That's great, but where's the innovation? Who is going to look at the market and the medium of gaming and think, let's try to convey a theme. Let's try to immerse the player more so than movies or books ever could. Well, since the blowup of multiplayer games like CoD, nobody is willing to do that. The cost of a AAA game is enormous, so they won't settle for anything less than a huge mulitplayer game. The introduction of corporations like Activision are seriously the death of intelligent videogames.

Xbox kinect?

I agree, I'm not too big on shooters so I've been playing Video Games way less than used to since it's kinda boring.
Now if there were more GTA/Saints Row style games I'd be in heaven.

I'm not talking about the innovation of technology. Fuck, you could even say graphics ruin a premise for an intelligent game. In fact, the most complicated/deep game I've ever played is a 2d platformer called Braid.
It's got a plot with more depth and ambition that most movies out there. And it's a 5 hour game!

Ah ok. My bad. Bring Myst back? Lol Idk

Braid has a story worthy of a book in a video game. And it's so much more powerful BECAUSE of it's interactivity and what-not. What I'm getting at is we need more single player experiences like that.I'm not talking about the innovation of technology. Fuck, you could even say graphics ruin a premise for an intelligent game. An extremely innovative attempt to steal an idea from Nintendo. Sony is doing the same thing. And I don't even mean the Wii, it goes back to the power glove.ripd wrote:

A new way to control a game is not the same thing as an innovative game, especially if it isn't new at all.
Some of the best games ever made were in the mid-eighties. Most every popular game today has it's gameplay roots there.

I wouldn't say Microsoft have Nintendos idea. Agreeably the Wii Revolutionised gaming however, Kinect is the next advancement in the technology. And if you get technical, there is a big difference between the 2. Wii uses Bluetooth signals to and from the remote and sensor to pin point positions. Kinect is a step closer to virtual reality putting you physically in control. Saying Sony copied the Wii is more appropriate. Kinect is innovative in it's own right, it offers a new experience for gamers and I'm sure with time there will be some unique games. It's still a baby.

Y'all are getting to deep about video games.

I find that if kinect ever wants to become big, it needs dev support (no duh so does anything). Difference is, they need to have good inovative games that aren't all dance, virtual animals, and "Kinect Sports". The most interesting thing I see with the kinect is hackers getting their hands on these things. They are truly what will make the difference with kinect. Cause kinect is an "open" platform for hackers. I still personally thing that motion gaming of any sort is a pile of 💩. Basically, Move and Kinect created a whole new way to look like an idiot infront of you tv. Button-Game-Controllers FTW!

Get a real hobby outside your bedroom?
If you don't eat and shit video games, then when you do occasionally play them it will be more enjoyable. There is life outside your xbox, go find it and make your video games a more enjoyable thing.

Anybody played Minecraft?..pretty innovative. Start out with nothing and turn it into a world of your own that can be tore down at any minute..I haven't personally played it yet, but the concept seems amazing...Games seem to be so focused on MP bc that's what alot of players want right now, to be able to say I outsmarted "so and so" rather than just I beat this games crummy AI. MP adds the detail of human ingenuity rather than just the same AI processes. That being said, I do enjoy the shooters that have come out recently, but I too look forward to the games you can really immerse yourself into and lose an ENTIRE day while playing, like the Half-Life franchise, or Elder Scrolls. Now THOSE are proper video games😋

Bioshock! Still a shooter yes but so diffrent and unique from any other game! They got the right idea! Cant wait for the new one.

Kinect to me failed because you cannot move in a 3D environment. The market that it's geared towards is the wrong kind of market for gaming. I'll agree it's innovative, but im not talking technology.
Now to that dumbass who said there's more to life than my xbox... I probably play video games no more than the average casual player. However, I just gave it some thought as a medium.
And I realized that games like
CoD or Uncharted arnt really games. Their more interactive movies. Cut scenes with gameplay as the filler. One hallway, and at the end is another cut scene. That's not what gaming should be.Gaming should focus on it's interactivity. That's what separates it from movies. There are VERY few games that Do that. Minecraft was a great example. It's an indy game. So no "million dollar "budget that it has to abide by. No deadline or budget leads to more creativity.

I love assassin's creed, and some of the missions require intelligence.

Something else will come along and take it's place. Shooters aren't exactly new anymore in the videogame market.

The problem with AC is you can go through the entire game just pressing x to counter. Don't even have to stealth. And the sci fi part of the story to me is horrible. Kill the immersiveness and not well presented.I love assassin's creed, and some of the missions require intelligence.
But at the same time you wicked moments where you'll be running through the crowd, knocking people over, and then a smooth transition to the rooftops where you have the whole city before you.
AC definitely has it's moments. I did like actually
