Black Hawk Down

Has anyone ever read this book? I thought it was just... In one word, Amazing. When I read about the guys that died, you actually felt sorry because of the over-descriptive writing. (Based on a True Story, actually IS a true story).

Seen the film. Nothing special
-
If you like that you should read "The Gift of Valor". If that doesn't bring you to the brink of tears your a cold hearted son of a bitch!
-
An old co-worker of mine that I keep in touch with is an ex-marine and is now back in Afghanistan as one of those CIA death squad guys. He loved the movie and although I never seen it he gave me a quote which appears in the beginning of the movie that might be in the book about the end of war for a soldier is only at death. I translated it for him into Greek and Latin because he said it was Plato--it wasn't I let Jim know--but he got it tattoed in Latin across his shoulder last month and sent me the pick.
-
The quote at the beginning is "Only the dead have seen the end of war". The movie was a great tribute to the servicemen would lost their life in that battle. The book was excellent also. Both very very well done. If you liked that book, try We Were Soldiers Once and Young. It is about the first air cav unit mission of Vietnam and written by Lt Col. Hal Moore.
-
If you want an amazing book written from a soldiers perspective check out The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. And of course All Quiet on the Western Front
-
For the record...Guy Sajer was a German infantryman in WWII. It is NOT a Nazi book though. It is about a 17 year old boy on the frontlines of combat.
-
Thanks. Might check that out in a couple of weeks

It's one of my favorite books/movies. Ridley Scott went a bit over the top I think, but the event itself amazes me. It hit America so hard to lose 19 men, all because of a tactical error. In the process we kill over 1000 militia. So Clinton pulls out and let's Somalia destroy itself, and a million more people die.
It was horrible, and yet it was so clear what needed to be done for that country, and we failed. Then Ethiopia marches in and does what we wouldn't.
Ahhh, well. Let's go kill 77 religious nuts in Texas. Awesome.
-
If u liked BHD, check out "Killing Pablo" also by mark Bowden. Guaranteed u will not br able to put the book down.
-
I just saw the movie last week. I thought it was pretty good.

I second this. Thought both books were very thorough and moving. The movies, they had what I guess were necessary movie enhancements, but got the points across as well. It's not blind patriotism. If you don't like where you are living, move. It's that hard. I don't appreciate people putting down my country. There are much worse places you could be. If you don't like the US, try Somalia, Congo, Iraq, Iran, or Afghanistan. After you been there, then we will see what song you sing.Neko wrote:

The bravery and sacrifices made are worth more than anything you can or will ever do.

IT IS blind patriotism.
telling someone to get out cause they don't like it and u do.
FYI those countries u mentioned probably wont take a US immigrant.
maybe you should get out and go live somewhere that has an oppressive regime that tells u to get out if u don't like it.people like you aren't just holding america back. you are holding back the whole world.

Blind patriotism is for the blind. Go read some brailIt's not blind patriotism. Instead of bitching and moaning, try doing something to fix the perceived problems. Don't hate because of a few flaws. Show some pride and try to fix what you think is wrong. The US is far from perfect, but it's a whole lot closer to it than anywhere else out there.

Not agreeing with everything is one thing but "hating this filthy country" is another
-
If you hate this "filthy" country nobody is holding you prisoner. You're free to pack your things and leave
-
Ok, I agree , kinda.
I say feel free to (self)hate, just don't sit back & complain, do something about it or GTFOThe complainers irritate me as much as the blind following the blind

I'm not proud of our president, but I do take in the fact that I have a say in who van be President, amd in the way we select our president.
I am not proud of the direction he is taking this Country in. We are better than that.
But I still proud of The USA and proud to be an American.
And I will do everything in my power to fix what I think is wrong. I have nit missed an election or a vote on any level since 1984.
Theresults don't always turn out as I want, but I will never hate this Country for it.
To say you hate this country is to say you hate yourself. Because you have a voice in determing the directio it takes.

'schuss my typos. Typing with gloves on
-
And I think a lot of you need to look up the word patriotism. I don't believe you truly understand it.
