I did my own research. How do you justify the tariffs that have been placed on US goods coming into Canada for the last 20 years then react to the US placing tariffs on Canada like weโre Satan?
Before Donald Trump took office, Canada had tariffs on certain U.S. products. Still, these were generally in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). These tariffs were relatively low and applied to specific categories like agricultural products, dairy, and poultry, which are sectors protected under Canada's supply management system. For example, Canada imposed tariffs on U.S. dairy imports to protect its domestic dairy industry. *clutches pearls*
The below states The US had 5,735 tariffs on Canadian imports in 2022.

Additionally, the USMCA was signed by Trump.

Imagine locking in a 2.95% mortgage rate. Ten years go by , youโve built your life around that deal.
Then a new mortgage officer shows up and says, โWeโre adding 110% to your rate. Now itโs over 6%.โ
At that point, itโs not a deal anymore , itโs a scam.
Thatโs how other countries feel when the U.S. suddenly slaps massive tariffs on long-standing trade agreements.

I appreciate your research and perspective. I was more asking Canadians how they squared the two since theyโre saying itโs unfair.
Iโm not gonna sit here and argue tariffs are great. I donโt know much about them and Iโm clearly not passionate enough to even google. It just seems to me if youโre going to tariff us and then we tariff you thatโs fair. I donโt think we should be a world charity and given our past discussions thatโs probably where we differ. Our country has its own problems such as being $36 T in debt.
Either way, donโt have a dog in the fight of tariff land and arguing international trade policy isnโt on my to do list today.

It's the Americans that are stuck paying these tariffs not the country they are imposed on. Then we don't have American alternative companies to buy from. How do these tariffs help the average American? Were not only losing access to fair deals, were losing access to items all together.

It doesnโt matter what we do when we are so politically polarized. Half the country must be against it, whatever it is.
Even if we would have been all for these changes 30 years ago as a democrat, doesnโt matter. What ever the party machine says we must believe to our core.
Chocorations are up 25%.

Quebec gets 13B in equalization payments per year. Where do you think that money comes from? Take your BS liberal Trudeau/Carney loving rhetoric and shove it. The only reason Carney won was because the NDP imploded under jagmeet singhโs leadership. Bend over Pose. Itโs going to get way worse for us Canucksสโสสษชแด สแดแดแดส-ษชษด wrote:

Equalization payments are a function of the federal government that, in the Canadian context, describe an unconditional transfer of funds from the federal government to provincial governments. They are not unique to Canada and are present in many large countries with federal systems of governmentโcountries where the national government delegates many powers to smaller governments at the state or provincial level.
-
Equalization payments are made so that the federal responsabilities delegated to provinces are paid for. In the US too, some states pay in and some withdraw. Thatโs how federations of states usually operate. If alberta wants to secede over basic functions of government, let them lol AB is already embarassing enough as is

Kind of like how tariffs are intended but not used as. The tariffs imposed are purely retaliation for the unnecessarily high and unequal tariffs placed on goods the US is exporting. It is not the end game, the end game is lower tarrifs on US goods and more equitable and low tarrifs on goods coming into the US.
