Is the USA self imploding?
Forums › General Discussion › Is the USA self imploding?-
As the northern neighbour, I’m trying figure out if Trump is a Machiavellian genius or an idiot. Same for the people around him. Picking fights with Canada, the EU, England, Mexico, NATO. But cozying up to Russia. There are lots of Trump supporters here, can anyone explain in a cogent way what the plan is?

What called for a surgeon has been appointed to a lumberjack. Cuts and removals are needed but clear cutting is not the best way to go about it IMO

Mr. Trump is a business man and a celebrity, and I think he sees things differently than most politicians. He doesn’t rely on tradition or soft politics. He uses them against his opponents. He’s not an idiot by any means, and he’s not evil in my opinion. Just different, and trying to reset things that actually have been sinking our country for a while now.
A favorite quote: Don’t take him literally, but take him very, very seriously.

As an equities trader (and trump voter), he has been horrible for the stock market thus far. We will see if his long term plans change that. But, at the moment I am not thrilled. Given, I think with Kamala in office, equities would be in a similar place.

Trump's not an idiot, but he knows how to appease them. He just spreads lies and bs like any salesman would. He just wants to have a legacy and be remembered as the president who prevented WW3. Doing that will ensure himself a name in the history books decades from now. His ego is so big he will stop at nothing to achieve these goals, even if it means scurrying around the law whenever he sees fit. You can love him or hate him, but these are just facts. Some good might come from the presidency, but only time will tell if the country made the right decision this time around.

There are two outcomes at the end of Trumps presidency, either he will be remembered as the best person of the 21st century or the worst- both are equally terrifying

Just an fyi- I retired from civil service a bit ago & got part time job. I work 1/2 as many hours, way less stress & net with the p/t gig + pension for 22 years is more than when I was in civil service. gross isn’t as high- but no more union dues, 7.5% pension deductions & health premium.Brown🎵Note wrote:

Also FICA and SSA taxes are much lower.
-
Also- when I do reach SSA retirement age, the SSA retirement basically would replace the wages from the p/t gig.
-
For those who think civil servant pensions are draining taxes - they aren’t. The pension plan earnings exceeded liabilities up until the housing crash in 2009. The government was expected to pay the % of cost but didn’t have to up to that point due to fund earnings
-
After the bailout of banks and pension reform acts, the government had renegotiated union contracts that made each employee pay the 7.5% for pension costs & also mandated higher costs for anyone hired after the expired contract- they also decreased employer share of cost for healthcare & increased employee contribution. My health insurance premium cost me 679/mnth. A month before I retired- a new union took over representation & had their own health insurance plans- the government contribution of 475/mnth goes to my plan but my premium is zero. Plan was downgraded a tier & max out of pocket increased- otherwise no notable difference
-
The new employees do not get an employer contribution to healthcare- instead they have a medical savings plan that the employer will match the employees contribution up to 4% gross. The employee can use that to cover premiums or out of pocket costs if they enroll
-
That isn’t all govt entities- yet. It’s becoming more common though.

Thanks for everyone’s input, I read them carefully. I’m still not sure what the ‘big plan’ is for so much disruption.

Public safety (law & Fire) usually have better deals for both retirement and health benefits due to the nature of the job creating health issues and early retirements, not to mention recruitment stagnation

We’re literally going bankrupt as a country and still provide support to the entire world and when we’re like hey, we can’t keep doing this. Everyone thinks we’re insane. The whole world is acting like a 40 year old dude who lives in his parents basement that is being made to get his first job. We’re not your meal ticket anymore. If you don’t like that too bad.

I agree that it’s not the US’s job to provide protection to the rest of the world. But the rest of the world is realizing the US is no longer a trustworthy ally and are remaking alliances. A healthy thing.

Trump is not that successful as a business man more fails than home runs . But he did do a great job not going to jail that’s absolutely true.
