How did people mob up before code sites?

Please no obvious answers like "they punched codes" haha. I mean how did people get codes before all the codesites and temp codes came out? Was it simply thru the invite code forum? I'd be interested to know.

I started using the invite forum and then there was a crappy add codes site made.. Just an a-z of invite codes, was really shit compared with today's standards.

BEFORE there were forums (in the dark ages), you had to go through people's comments. Then you'd go through the comments of everyone who had posted there. And so on and so on and so forth.

I remember thinking it was great when I got up to 32 people in my mob

you really had to spam the shit out of people in random places in hope they didn't have you. but the matrix and ifriendcode had TW codes pretty early in the game. I remember in Jan when I had everything entered, inventing the "are you in my mob?" kind of personalized spam. there were fewer massive lists of codes and it got annoying because people would post their shit and it actually meant something. just look at old comments on old players. there's a lot more "I already have you in my mob, stop spamming me" commentary.

What was like a big mob back in the day? Just before invite forum came out say.

Lol, I did this when I first started because I was used to playing games without any other way to get codes. Then I discovered the invite forum & did both. I got up to 6k that way. On my way to 6k I checked out a couple code sites & decided they were too much of a hassle. Plus, I had already entered so many codes that I didn't want to re-punch the same ones. I was in the invite forum so often that that wasn't an issue.BEFORE there were forums (in the dark ages), you had to go through people's comments. Spam, spam, spam. Worse thing was if you didn't get someone added quick, they may quit playing in a week so you had to like stand on top of motherfuckers.
