Thoughts on tipping culture

Let me first say that when I go out to eat, I tip 25% as a minimum, even if service was horrendous. If a 25% tip is $9.63, I’ll round up to the nearest dollar.
Should it be the customers responsibility to leave a good tip as opposed to the employer paying a decent wage? For those who have been/are waiters, what would you have preferred, a livable wage or to live off of tips.
Also, what about these random places that are fast food asking for tips like Starbucks. The whole “The screen is gonna ask you a quick question”. Should I give a tip there? Do they make the same wage as a waiter at a restaurant? Or Torchy’s Taco’s. They expect a tip just for taking my order.
I’ve somewhat adopted the idea that if I order standing up or in a drive through I’m not tipping. Am I wrong?

I have some thoughts on the whole "its gonna ask you a question" tipping phenomenon. Before you had tip jars and the baristas/cashiers made better wages and had more insentive to provide a better service. Now with the automatic tipping nudge, employers don't have to pay as much and employees don't need to put as much effort into their job. Now i usually at least tip when prompted if I sense the cashier gives somewhat a shit about the way they earn their living but if they are unbothered to at least render a greeting back or even look at me I will decline. I don't like the position it puts you in either. You upfront make the employee feel entitled and say I do recieve shitty service I still feel like the asshole for not tipping. On top of people who are struggling to get by who cant afford to always tip 15-20%.

I don't tip if they include the tip in the bill unless I really loved the service. I tip 15% maybe 20 if the service was excellent. I do not tip at places that suddenly ask for tips despite never having done it before. I do not tip at places that I do not sit down at, unless I frequent there and like the employees. Tipping culture is getting crazy, I don't want to perpetuate subway asking for a 20% tip every time I want a damn sammich

If I'm being waited on minute after minute, then theres a tip involved. After all, someone is tending to my every need. If I'm just giving you the order foe you to put into the computer, you'll be just fine doing your job. You get orders wrong many times over, you think you're doing something that's so much harder than what it is, and for God's sake, the ice cream machine is always broke!!! Want to be tipped?? Earn it!

I grew up in the UK and now live back in Ireland. Tipping culture to me is a weird concept…
I will only tip if the service is something different and extremely good. My partner went to the states and she said the servers are so different to here and they pretty much don’t leave you alone… that would make me avoid paying a tip 😅
I feel anyone in hospitality who relies on a tip needs to just walk out across the country to get proper pay so tips are an added bonus and not their livelihood

Excuse me? Ye pay 20%-25% for a tip? And it’s expected of you? Why? Here tipping is very much voluntary and 10% is a good tip. Also, tipping at fast food places? That’s ridiculous, “yes, can I have a burger and chips” “ok, perfect” *taps a few buttons* “alright now tip me 20% of your order”

I personally want to be checked on quite frequently, mainly because I go through my drink very quickly. I’m chugging water constantly lol. So I need them to keep coming by to fill my water back up -

Yes. Waiters in the US only make $2.13 an hour since most of their income comes from tips. It is screwed up, but that is the system. So I don’t mind paying 25%. But that doesn’t negate the fact that this whole tipping structure needs to be remodeled.Excuse me? Ye pay 20%-25% for a tip? And it’s expected of you? Why? And yes, the fast food places thing is stupid.
When I go to Starbucks I make sure to use my Starbucks card because it bypasses the whole tip screen and I don’t have to have that awkward encounter with the Barista. -
As someone with little extra money, I usually do 15%, but make an effort to do more if the service was really good. For a store or fast food I never tip. The prices are intended to cover business expenses and cover wages, so why would I tip for them doing their job? Unless you just have the extra money and thought the person deserves it, I wouldn’t worry about it.

That’s why this whole argument is in place. Employers should pay a livable wage and negate tipping -
Tipping used to be for service staff who have provided exceptional service, now it's become an expectation. I think that tip culture has gotten out of control and it's being abused by employers as a way to pay their employees less. If I go to a nicer restaurant with wait staff I'll tip. But I'm not gonna entertain the smokeshop that prompts me with a 20% minimum tip for the employee who just spun the iPad around.

Tipping for horrendous service encourages terrible people to stay in a profession they don’t belong in. This degrades everyone’s experience as a whole.
I’ve been known to leave 50% tips for people who are great at their job. I’ve also been known to carry a penny into the restaurant to leave as a tip in case i get someone who should find something else to do with their life.
