Samsung tablet?
Forums › General Discussion › Samsung tablet?-
I know this is blasphemous (sp?) to post I'm the forum but I figure someone out there in forum land has some input.
Anyone spent any serious time on this samsung tab? How'd the android app store these days? I love my iPhone but refuse to give into the iPad. I know the iPad is bigger but in my specific case smaller is better as it's primary use will be for watching movies at sea in my bunk. And I don't get alot of space in there. More important then size is expandable memory. So other then size can anyone note any serious limitations or capabilities? I only got to play with one for a short time at future shop.

iPad is not that big! It fits comfortably in ur hand to watch movies etc and besides wud u really want to watch a movie on a teeny screen. Android is fast catching up on apple and has flash ability unlike apple although saying that I think this problem will be over come in the near future. U mention memory. 16GB is way more than needed for the average user unless of course u plan on dowloading thousands of 3 hr Harry potter films(: if u won't sway towards iPad then the samsung wud b well favoured in my opinion!

16gb is nothing.Im gettin new touch 4g 32gb as I have 8th and I have lots of good apps.decent apps are like 100-500-800 mb.and I have like 5 films I can't put on coz of it.and with my 8gb taken up if I had 16gb with 5 films that would be 15.5gb taken up roughly.and then I'd again have not much room.32gb is about right.64gb is only for people with insanely huge movie and music collections with like 500apps

My iPhone is 32gb and it's over half full of music lol..

Blackberry Playbook as an alternative??? Its supposed to be a tad better than the Samsung and according to rumours a lot cheaper too......

Get the samsung. Then convince nick to make turf wars for android

16 gb would be okay if I could come home every night and drop what was on it...but I leave for 6 month trips all the time...and I want something I can go to another guys laptop and just drop his movies on my device. No iPad is not large and may fit in your hand well...ever see a navy rack (aka bunk) tiny. I was fine with my psp for movies last time I went because it's literally 6 inches away from my nose. iPad just a tad on the bulky side
-
I said 16gb is okay I meant 64 gb. I have my phone for music but even still would burn through 64gb at sea in no time
-
Enit turf wars for android would be sick. The android market is almost near apple now.
-
There's an app that converts flash on the fly. Gotta buy it though.

BigBK - Go spend some time handling these tabs in an Apple or Samsung store. You will find the iPad is light and not really that big.
If you can be patient until next Feb, there are rumours that a smaller pad, in-between the iPod Touch and iPad coming. If you already have an iPhone, it won't be compatible with the Samsung tab (Apple's not big on interoperability), so waiting for the new tab makes sense.

One other thing to consider, if media viewing is the primary requirement, is the Archos range of media tablets. They have updated these to support Android, but you can get Windows based tabs that can play pretty much anything you can on a PC. All the new tabs are Internet ready too and come in various sizes. One might just fit your needs.
-
Thanks fluke...havnt seen the new archoseses the 1st or 2nd gens all I've seen. You saybthe new ones are wifi as well? Media is primary but the ability to use skype and the Internet in general while in port is also a selling point. Fact is most people bring thier windows laptops to sea with them. Ita just easier to have a non-apple non iTunes machine. iPhone is strictly for music (and app games like this) but any tab I get has to be able to just drag an drop movies from other peoples junk. I think you're right though on waiting. Apple is winning the tab war but there's gotta be some good competition coming...right?

I think android will overtake, but it will depend on vendors pushing out quality tabs, rather than just 'me too' tablets. It is a more open platform, so you can connect to pretty much everything easily, whereas Apple like to keep things within the family.. I'm not sure if the arches tabs support wireless Internet .. WiFi at least, but maybe not 3G.. You'll have to check their site for more info .. For the money, isn't a small netbook the simplest solution?
-
Yeah, it's like a laptop, only can't do as much. No thanks.
-
It's hard to explain fluke. Bunk I have in the navy is not very big. Last major trip I took I used my psp. What I do is mount it to the bottom of the bunk above me. So basically the screen is 6 or 8 inches away. A laptop wouldn't make sense aste keyboard would hang down or what have you.
-
I'm getting an idea now. You could buy an iPad and stick it (Velcro) to the bottom of the bunk above. The netbook idea only works if you want to easily share stuff (yes, I know it's not as powerful as a laptop, but BigBK wasn't asking for power, just media playback and connectivity). I'm guessing the android tabs will be easier to connect & share, so def check them out and ask questions and ask for a demo too. You don't want to be out at sea when you find out it can't do something you desperately wanted.
