Counting the hits and not the misses

How do faithful people deal with issues such as Covid19 or basically anything that indiscriminately impacts large groups negatively when it comes to god/gods. Many of our Christian friends give credit to their wealth/success or health to their faith and dedication to JC.
I personally separate believers in 2 categories. People that have a belief in a creator, but feel that we are left to our own devices. This doesn’t pertain to them. It’s the ones that feel daily prayer and actions have direct consequences or blessings from their creator. Therefore giving them positive rewards in their lives for their dutiful acts. A ‘personal god’ if you will.
-ex. Have you ever given god credit for someone recovering from cancer, a tragic accident, or finding a new job. Or am I taking people too literally? Maybe they are using god metaphorically🤷🏽♂️ I don’t believe most are. Do those who give credit for the hits also hold god accountable for the misses? Or do you not perceive them as misses? -
I am personally secular, but am not looking to sling mud on anyone’s beliefs or lack there of. Just puzzled at how people justify things that cause death on a large scale. I can’t see how one could make sense of children suffering from these incidents.

On our level, we are left to die. Further out in the universe, I'm not sure ..

I went to a Catholic High School. Faith, Accountability and Integrity were constant topics. A Monsignor there said it best when he expressed that the closest thing he has seen for a person to be living in the manner Jesus preached, happens to be an atheist. The atheist cared for others and tended to their needs because it was the right thing to do as a human- not on a pretense that he would be rewarded by his maker or had to offset other misdeeds of his.

Some of my most hated people of all time are the “I prayed in it and god wants me to do this (self serving) thing.”
Also the people who thank god for every positive in life. “Thanks god for helping me win the super bowl” but they never say “fuck god for those starving children”. Oh no, that’s just a “test”

All the bad, pain and suffering is caused by the devil. This is according to Bobby Bouchard’s (the waterboy) mom.
