I started thinking about this the other day.... I know a lot of guys who used to be marines, worked along side them and they’ve never done this at all... the other day I saw one coworker getting yelled at by some older guy, who was a veteran, demanding she thanked him for his service. She said she was about to but he started yelling at her and she always thanks active and prior military personnel.

Now I know a lot of guys who love to be praised for being in the military and I know others who hate the recognition and hate being thanked.

But my question is... if you’re a cashier at a fast paced store (no real time for chit chat)
You’re prior military and someone in uniform or someone who’s a veteran shows their ID...
Do you thank them?
Is it weird to say thanks to someone when you’ve done the same thing?
Do you feel belittled thanking them, not making it known even the slightest you used to be in the military or in the reserves or something?

Like I said I work with a lot of marines (some still in the reserves) but I’ve never heard them thank someone. They usually joke about something that only they would understand and silently make it known who they are or what their rank was.

But do/would any of you active/prior military thank someone who’s in the military?

Sounds like he's just a cranky old man who looks for reasons to yell at people. I just spent $1700 putting up an 8 foot privacy due to a similar cranky old man.

I'd be cranky too if that big of mob was milling around next door to my house.

no reason to thank someone if its not genuine. never thought about prior service thanking current service members. i dont think its belittling if you did thank someone nor if you didnt. no one is entitled to a thank you
