How many of you are mining cryptocurrencies? I don’t bother with GPU as it’s too much of a competition... but CPU mining seems to be the next big thing and I get a few dollars a day from it! 💵

Do you consider electricity, cooling, hardware cost, and your time in that few dollars a day?

Most profitable crypto processing operations I’ve seen have to steal resources from distributed botnets or maicious web applets. Either that or the particular chains you are working might have artificially inflated value.

I’m curious to see how you are profiting.

Amazing that crypto mining has had the dramatic affect on energy consumption. What a stupid waste in these times. Wile I’m not a strong Green type and not fully bought into global warming / climate change as a economic determinant, I do think smart energy use in general is wise and CCM is not.

Amazed this is not more widely discussed.

Agree brown, seems most profits come from passing mining costs on to others one way or another.

It also depends on what you’re mining with and what coin- I know a guy that has hundreds of raspberry pi’s which consumes something like 80% less power than a typical server .. I think if someone can come up with something like a usb asci miner for cpu purposes then that would stop the need for all that wasted energy computing algos..

Also- if you’re mining something like a cryptonight coin it goes on your cache size and doesn’t ramp your cpu to 100% - so in that respect it can save energy, only downside is you’re competing with GPU miner if you’re mining that particular algo

We catch people at work using work electric and network to mine cryptocurrency. They get fired on the spot. I've seen it happen twice just this year.

Saying “it’s all green to me” completely undermines and ignores the entire use and meaning of “green.” It’s not about you, it’s the use and waste of energy, which unless we go solar (or nuclear, I guess) is a finite resource. It’s not green “to you,” you just don’t care.

Agree with Brown. Small scale crypto mining is not profitable unless you live in a college dorm with free electric. Crypto trading is where the money is...
