NO MORE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS 2018
Forums › General Discussion › NO MORE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS 2018-
A study was just released that examines possible correlation between states with high gun homicide rates and permissive gun laws. It actually found that states with stricter gun laws tend to have lower gun homicide rates. Of course, correlation isn’t proof, but if someone wants to use stats as a basis for personal stances, well, there you go.
PS Before someone brings up the obvious in Chicago, Chitown is a different case, which has been studied. There’s a disordinate number of guns flooding into Chicago for a number of reasons.
-
Huh. Perhaps it’s just big cities. Can you link the study for us?
I notice at the top of the “states” with the most gun murders per capita are: (2010)
Washington DC 21.8 per 100,000
Louisiana 9.6
Missouri 7.0
Maryland 7.3
South Carolina 6.1
Delaware 5.3
Michigan 5.6
Miss 5.6This list isn’t topped by the states with the most lax gun laws... But some are close. Maryland is a dark blue state with better than average restrictions, and DC has such tight control they are practically banned.
These don’t count non-murders. An important distinction.
-
I mean really... Texas has a lower gun murder rate than California!
-
There’s actually been two recent studies: one by Rand, which is nonpartisan, and the other is rhe Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which is a peer-reviewed journal.
https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR2088.html
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/gun-control-laws-state-impact-on-shooting-deaths-suicide-study
I had to link the CBS story since JAMA is by subscription, but if you search, you might be able to find a more detailed version for yourself.
-
I see holes in the article. Again, leaving out suicide, accidents, and self defense paints a very different picture on which states have the biggest problem with firearm murders. Areas with the biggest murder rates are invariably “blue” zones, where guns are regulated the most. I think the laws might be toughest because the murder rate is highest in these areas.
Also, the quip at the end about CDC not studying gun violence because it’s illegal makes no sense. The previous administration asked the CDC to study gun violence, and the last report I read by the CDC said that guns save far more lives than they take.
I smell politics.
-
Correction: The CDC did not create the report. They commissioned it.

I mean, if you think your analyses and stats knowledge is stronger than both Rand and JAMA, I give up. Call it flawed, biased, or whatever makes you comfortable. I’m not going to debate this.

Let’s switch to a lighter topic. Abortion, politics or religion. Your choice

Maybe combine it?
Shooting babys?
Sounds okay, because there are no stats that say its not okay 👍🏼 -

They are all flawed and biased. The numbers are the numbers, but what makes them contradict each other is which questions are asked. It’s the same with all fields. We do our best to not have confirmation bias, but we’re only human.I mean, if you think your analyses and stats knowledge is stronger than both Rand and JAMA, I give up. No research paper can prove to someone that the nebulous concept of personal liberty outweighs the nebulous concept of public good, or the other way around. The premise is personal.
So yeah... Let’s switch to abortion. Prove to me with research papers and statistics that a Woman’s right to murder babies is more important than the baby’s right to live. Heheh... I kid. Pun intended.

I still haven’t heard any response to the CDC foundation’s research paper that claims guns are successfully used to save lives more than they are used to take them.
I mean if “public good” is the goal, how does that work for the anti-gun types? Not only is self protection an inalienable right, it’s ALSO in the interest of the greater society.

My response is it seems like you extrapolated what you wanted and didn’t read the entire study. There’s a lot said there. But it’s cool. You can lead a horse to water...

So I assume based on this that I am straw-manning you. You actually don’t want to reduce the number of guns out there or ban certain types of weapons. You just want to prevent gun violence which is cool. I personally tend to ignore most of this study because I disagree on the “how” in most sections.Brown🎵Note wrote:

Why aren’t there laws that require 5 point harnesses, roll cages, and helmets to ride in a car? It will certainly save lives... We could make it harder to get cars, and make people re-test every year. We could put speed governors on all cars set to 30mph and build car lane walls out of dense foam barriers and save most every car fatality.
There is a balance, and we live with the danger. To me this also applies to guns. Where are all the school kids walking out demanding tougher car laws? More of them are killed by cars than assault rifles.

Are the pro gun supporters part of a Milita? Retired Supreme Court Justice John Stevens idea of repealing the Second Amendment would significally reduce the numbers of School Shootings in the United States. Get rid of the gun culture!
Here's a question for the pro gun supporters, would you still support it if it happened to your child's school and your child was a victim of a school shooting? Or if it was your child that committed the shooting with your gun that you thought that you safely stored away?

2. A retired Supreme Court justice can’t repeal the 2nd ammendment because Congress (the people) doesn’t want to. Good thing.
3. Anyone with principles wouldn’t change their political beliefs based on a personal tragedy. It’s either a right or it isn’t. Do you have a right to self preservation or to combat tyrannical government or not?

I used to believe in free speech until my kid said something I disagree with. Down with the first ammendment!

I really like this. I need to get help. I can’t believe it..It boils down to entitled little assholes with no discipline thinking the world owes the shit. Had they a good old fashion ass beating they wouldn’t have touched the guns in the first place. Boo hoo life sucks. Get over it. 2 of my kids are teens and still come ask before they touch something in the fridge... think they are gonna grab a gun lol. Hell no. They we taught to never touch things that’s not theirs and respect their elders or wake up in a few days 👊🏻 and try again. At the same time we pay attention to them and if they seem to be going through shit we sit down and work it out with them. Don’t let shit bottle up and hope it goes away.

Then there is thisYes BN... what are you thinking. Through out all logic, numbers and common sense and just admit every other country is better than ours :). Forget that people risk their lives and that of their families to get into this nation where our violence is soooo bad. They are literally dying to get here lol. Maybe it’s
that same gun freedom they are looking for :) nah probably not the freedom... hmmm they just enjoy violence also. -
