I suspect much of this has to do with long and harsh winters.

The almond trees didn't grow well along the coast, but by the 1800s California farmers had found a home for almonds further from the ocean, where it was dryer. Today most US almonds come from California, and California also ships lots of almonds to India and China, where almonds have become very popular.

California is home to 99% of all pistachio orchards in the US...

Home of the craft beer revolution in 70s and 80s Anchor Steem, Sierra Nevada, etc. Home to best (or second best depending on who you ask) wine in the world Napa Valley, home to thousand miles of the best coastline from ragged craggy Euraka to mellow but wild Big Sur to chill crazy Laguna, home to both the oldest (bristle cone) and tallest (redwood) trees in the world. My thumbs are tired. Oh yah, and 12 months of motorcycle riding!!

Hawaii and Oregon compete in the coastline dept. Maybe WA also. But yeah, aside from the fact that a cardboard box under the freeway is $2,000/month rent, Cali is a great place to grow up and live.

Yeah...growing up there in the 50’s-60’s was the best...I left in 74...moved back in 79...said fuck his place in 81 and made Atlanta my home.

Hawaii doesn’t have Patrick’s Point. Oregon doesn’t have San Diego. Either or. The bay and La are sky high. I have 30 acres cabin in Lassen county and a $1,500 mortgage in Chico 3bed 2bath.
