Deadspot question
Forums › General Discussion › Deadspot question-
I know from reading the forums that the deadspots are caused by geo-coder problems. My question is, would this be helped if the iPhone was on verizon too? Everyone says it is an apple problem, so that would be helped by a second network that covers a large portion of the country, right? Please forgive me asking this, if this is a stupid question. I am more geared toward the biological sciences than the technological sciences. :-)

Location issues are sometimes an Apple problem, as Apple is internalizing more and more. They are discontinuing their use of Skyhook location services in favor of their own database.
The geocoder is software that provides geographic information, like streets, roads, cities, addresses...
Two entirely seperate issues. Switching carriers will likely not help with geocoder issues.
Location/GPS info will place your position on a map based on gps coordinates.. The geocoder, basically, IS the map. It is what provides the specific map information for the position the gps places you. Sort of a GPS coordinates translator.
Take your phone out into the middle of a pasture r the middle of a lake. Somewhere far away from any streets or roads.
Fire up TW and go to the turf map. You will see your location in the middle of that field or lake, but you will not be able to build turf as there is no street or road information.
And that is what the deadspots are. Ares on the map where the geocoder is missing information.

So is the dead spot because the software picture of a street doesn't match with the software coding of the street? Hope this makes sense.

More like the picture of the street is missing. Or the picture is there, but the coding is missing.
The location services will place you on that road, but it will be gps coordinates. What the geocoder does is attach address or other information to those coordinates.
If you are standing on the street, location services may return something like 22.84781 N, 177.2947W. The geocoder would have the address info, such as 123 N. Main.
If that info is missing, the turf map may not recognize the area as being near a street or road.

Thanks. That clears it up! Appreciate you taking the time to explain it!
