On short notice it appears I need one. Local freezing or complete sedation for those who have gone through it?

Always go complete sedatation, bc, why not?
-
I had one approx 2-3 years ago. Was conscious throughout, it's not as bad an operation as people make it out to be in terms of pain. They numbed me up pretty well, and throughout the process would readminister a shot if I said I was feeling anything. That being said everyone has their own tolerances with the dentist so if sedation is on the table go for it, but there's nothing to worry about if it's freezing.

... because I have to work / do stuff. I've had procedures done where general anesthesia was the only option but it messes with you for a few days. Was hoping someone could tell me a local freezing would suffice.

... good to hear, right now I'm self medicating. It's a bitch, just want it fixed as fast as possible.

It probably would as du said, but myself I get sick days so I'm going all out. Not even a question of going back to work. That's prolly a solid two days off for me.

I've had a couple done with local freezing. I always find the injections uncomfortable, but I hate needles. No pain during the procedure just very uncomfortable keeping your jaw open that wide for so long.
-
...and why does the dentist always wait til he gets both hands and a foot in there and then ask you something?

Local is fine, assuming there's no infection. Otherwise the local doesn't get all the way down to the root. You'll notice soon enough if there's an infection.

Same as Derelict here. Had one done about 6 years ago. The shot was the most uncomfortable part for me and I also am not a fan of needles. However overall it wasn't that bad. I've heard these sketchy stories too of people having adverse reactions to anesthesia when they do sedation. Also insurance copay comes into play down here too. Sedation/gas or whatever is expensive.

Had it done a few years ago wide awake nothing too it. Before it's done that was pain.

Never had a root canal but I had a tumor on the roof of my mouth biopsied. I chose local anesthesia. Terrible experience. Based on that I will go with general anesthesia should I ever need a root canal.

Unfortunately had to get a couple done last year. I went with full sedation, woke up it was done, no pain... Then Percocet afterwards. 😵

All done, just local freezing. Zero pain during procedure.

Worst part about mine was the smell when they unearthed that dead root. Worst stench I ever experienced and you have to breathe through your nose.
