To travel effectively, you need to level up to at least lv 30, so you can build 86-influence turf. Then you build one turf after another in the direction of your goal, tearing down when necessary. This is hopping.
After that, the main factor that determines how fast/far you travel is how often you hop. When you get to Houston airport (or another TW airport - Houston is closest), you can fly to other places every two weeks.
