If an invite code has special characters from an app (a la Emoji) does someone inviting them have to have the same app and type them in? For example, if my inv code was 🔫GUN🔫 would they need the emoticons or could they just type GUN?

No. The emoticons are for decorational purpose.

No emoji codes that I've seen, 3 letter word will see more action anyways.

Only normal numbers and letters are used in invite codes. Emoji is just decoration (that was already said)

Actually I have seen codes that use emoji & require it. I've only seen 2 that 1 remember. It's also been fairly recent, before it wouldn't accept emoji. It's not a good idea to use it in your code though, since not everyone has the app.
