Religion? 2016? Do we need it? 😎

if you accept there is a god, is god all knowing and all powerful? then what of the dead to war, famine, disease, natural disasters, or just the dark side of humanity? what about extinction level events in earths history? gods just purging? or wiping the slate clean and trying again? all part of gods plan right? #AllLifeMatters?? does it? or is it up to us? we decide what matters, what survives. maybe life, chance, the universe decides and god watches creation unfold no matter which way it turns. either way it doesnt matter to me, i think we should be a positive influence on the world around us. encourage, inspire and motivate others to do good.

Are you stretching the truth a bit here, or trying to become a martyr? And decided to blame the church and beliefs they had for the bad things that happened to that point.
Experiences in my life and as I've studied, has brought me to believe that God is there, and that he is alive. As I've decided to follow what I understand to be his teachings i have had things thrown at me on the street, I have been yelled at, I have been beaten, I have been told that I'm a bad person, I have been shot at.
I have been judged for my beliefs because that the majority want things to throw God out of their life, and they know they cannot ever be rid of him. They want to feel good in their choices, but they know that they are against Gods teachings. As long as I live I will stand for God.
My Gods not dead. He's surely alive

as for religion, i believe its merely a social crutch. its not peoples faith that i question, its their motives for the public display. is it just a reason to get out and be seen, feel better about yourself? spiritual pat on the back? i have to say most of the flock doesnt carry their sunday behavior to the days of the week. its not a true lifestyle change, more of just a social call. and yes alot embrace it when they are weak or in trouble. its not just the non believers. plenty dont live the life outside of church but are quick to call on god when somethings wrong. and then have the balls to ask why. as if theres a reason. lol.

Allah gonna get you and your so called religion.
-
Wether or not we need religion everyone figures that out for themselves.
-
We aren't debating whether supernatural beings are a delusion or not... Of course they are.
What we are debating is whether human society still needs to control the masses with religion at this level of human social evolution.
Is the lie of religion more harmful than good? That's up for everyone to learn on their own, I guess. :)

Absolutely not needed.
It's just another thing that divides people. I guarantee more harm than good has come from it.
Oh a few first worlders feel better about their lives because they believe in God?Meanwhile people in the middle east blow themselves up for their Gods and to go against others.
Not to mention all the wars in general.Religion is not necessary, it brings peace to some but...so can pretty much anything?
Get a hobby, go hiking and connect with nature or something.
There's a whole lot of world to fill the gap in and any true God would want you to experience what they created, not mindlessly waste your time worshipping it or killing other people. And if there is a God that is that shitty and petty...why worship it at all?

"Brain trauma among football players (and athletes in other sports such as soccer and ice hockey) may be less the result of violent collisions that cause concussions as the cumulative effect of repetitive head impacts (RHI). The discovery has lead to increased calls by experts to take steps at all levels of sports, from professional down to the youth level, to limit exposure to such repetitive trauma..."

Nearly all religions where brought to people and imposed on people by conquerers and used as the framework to control their minds and establish a basis to attach everything else to such as laws and ideas.
Most the holidays we celebrate are Pagan. Christmas is the "rebirth of the sun" based of the winter solstice and the sun restarting it's cycle. Easter with its bunnies and eggs is a pagan fertility celebration.
Even the days of the week. Saturday day they worshipped Saturn, Sunday they worshipped the Sun, Monday the Moon, etc.
It sometimes works like a placebo pill and thus could be very useful within society. But we have to be careful

Well, the Christmas part was close, and the Easter part was almost spot on, both were adapted with the Birth and Death of Christ because that he happens to be a very important person and most every Christian loves to have a time to remember what he did (not to mention parties)Even the days of the week. Saturday day they worshipped Saturn, Sunday they worshipped the Sun, Monday the Moon, etc.
But this part is false, the planets were named after the Roman gods (at least most of them there may be some that are not now I can't remember) not the other way around, the days of the week had their own meanings.
Saturday in Spanish is still Sabado, which helps to tell its original meaning was Sabbath, the day that was set apart originally to worship the one God, it was moved to the first day of the week after the resurrection of Christ in order to remember his resurrection which happened on a Sunday
-
Fair enough.. I can't argue something unless I'm sure. I've read quit a bit however and it makes sense that for instance the birth of Christ was unknown and so they decided to celebrate it at the same time as winter solstice. I know for a fact that a lot of Catholic symbolism has to do with the sun and Jewish people have a lot of ancient symbolism pertaining to Saturn surprisingly in ancient times people where very knowledgeable about certain things beyond earth. Muslim use a lot of moon symbolism.

Whether or not you need religion is a very personal thing. I personally don't, and I'm too clever to fall for magical thinking anyway.

There are close to 2 million species of animals known to man, with thousands of new species being discovered every year. There are even more plant species. Then there are bacteria, fungi, amoeba. I know that Noah built a huge ark, and the animals remained on the Ark for about a year, give or take. My question is, since most animals either eat plants or other animals, what did they all eat during that year? And did Noah drop off various species in various places around the world after the flood? Is that where he first found them? Like, maybe kangaroos were picked up in India, but then dropped off in Australia. And why did he leave all the really cool turtles and lizards at the Galapagos Islands? Unless scientists can learn how to travel back in time, we will never know what Noah was thinking. Therefore, religion is still needed in 2016.

Heathens are always trying to take religion away...of course religion is needed, now more than ever actually. It's pretty obvious that the farther we get from God the worst things become. This liberal ideology likes to leave God out because for one it makes one accountable for their actions...liberals like to see the line between right and wrong be blurred as much as possible

why is god needed to be accountable? this speaks to a weakness in character. without a fear of hell you assume people just want to do bad things? that adds strength to the idea religion is just a crutch for the weak willed who want reassurance they can be forgiven and still get into heaven after they do something wrong. they dont want to change and do right, they rather continue their sinful ways and just ask forgiveness later. and getting rid of religion doesnt mean getting rid of god. just the bullshit that man has created to get in the way.Heathens are always trying to take religion away...of course religion is needed, now more than ever actually. How far back are you looking? It seems to me we are in the best time humans have ever known. What? Are you only going back 50 years? Okay... AIDS is no longer fatal. Explain.

in my experience and opinion most people use their religion as more of a social call and pat on the back than anything else. people put on their sunday best for a few hours but do not carry that dedication with them through out the rest of the week. and they don't bother to do any real reading or studying themselves but would rather just listen to someone standing behind the pulpit and take his word and interpretation as solid gold. why bother reading yourself right? once forgiven it's back to the sinners life until next sunday. lol.

I agree with Deicide. People feel more accountable for their own actions, good or bad, when they cannot credit or blame God for their actions. A smoker dies of lung cancer. Was it his time to die because God determined that, or because the cigarettes damaged his lungs?
Also, there are plenty of liberals who believe in God. Liberals have a tendency to accept that their religion is not necessarily more "correct" than other religions; you believe what you're taught, and I'll believe what I'm taught. No way to prove either. -
All hail the 'Golden Bren' I say come to the the nomadic church of random sideways thinking 🙏🏼 All are welcome and feel free to donate generously, if you can't see the collection plate then check in the choirboys smoke room (behind the alter on the left) the buggers are murder for nicking the money for fags, and yes for those who have already visited the candle sticks and chalice are fake (was cheaper than glueing them down or nipping too pawn shop to retrieve them every other Thursday bloody cb's) May the Golden shrimp of knowledge bless you all amen 🙏🏼

I think people give him too much credit they worked there ass off to do something in their life and then they thank God for it even though they're the ones who did it
-
I would encourage people to do their do diligence in regards to their faith. after all... it is their soul they are risking. isn't it worth knowing. and i'm not just talking about reading whatever book fits your faith but research the creation of that book. everything that went into it. when was it written or put together. where was it found, the translations that took place, the groups responsible for accepting what text was allowed and denying other text. why it was approved or denied. plenty of people have died surrounding religion I think that alone warrants more attention than just sitting in church once or twice a week and listening to someone else tell me what to think. what's more important than your soul and it's final destination?

To live. To enjoy. To be nice to others.
Oh yes and not too much worry about any hogwash anyone has wiggled up about potential afterlife. Thats why it is called faith and not knowledge. There are exactly two possibilities.:a) There is none: You will not be surprised - to be exact you will be ... nothing. b) There is something ... you may be surprised that it is not what your cult, sect, religion od spaghettikittchen has dreamed up to keep their sheep in line :)
-
I agree with some of that. There's 2 possibilities. however. the weight and importance of one of those is so great, to some it might outweigh everything else in life. besides life is incredibly short. not even a blink against the enormity of time. if there's even a possibility of an afterlife it's probably worth using the few short years that you have here in getting it right. if there's not then it doesn't matter any way. what is really lost? 50 years? 100 years? pfft. I say nothing. purpose and meaning for life, to live, experience, enjoy, be nice, be a positive influence in the world and leave it better than you found it, those might go along with your faith and plan for an afterlife but i'm not sure they should override it. if making the most of your life takes away from the chances of a positive afterlife than I would settle for not living to the fullest and investing in what comes next.
-
if there is no afterlife then sure, live life to the fullest, make your mark on the world. I would still shoot for being a positive influence on the world and leaving it a better place. pushing our limits of understanding about the universe and about ourselves. ignoring all the nonsense about religion and faith. I don't believe people need such fear tactics to naturally be good and stay away from "evil" or negative influences and decisions. but like you said, for now it's faith. even if you were to live 1000 years. would that be more valuable than the infinite time in an afterlife? spend it living it up? or spend it securing eternity?
-
The fact, I always find astounding (besides the afterlife-theory itself) is the evenly weird idea of wielding any influence on its preferences :)
There is a joke, I like in this regard: Joe dies and finds himself at the gates of .... well... of hell. A demon comes along and greets him. "Hello there! I am your Azrog, your entertainment guide. Let me show you around!". Joe is led around every kind of pleasurable activity attractions - bar, spa, cinema, massage parlor, yoga gym, etc. Joe is puzzled. Finally they pass a wooden wall. Spying through a hole, Joe sees the classical image of hell : fire, tar, sulfur, demons with spears piercing tormented souls. Joe turns to his guide:"And whats that?". Azrog smiles: "Thats the section for christians. They ordered the pain-package."

A lot. Of so called top scientists have in the last few year said they believe in a creater.
Even Stephen Hawkings recently said he believes in a creator. A lot comes down to things like maths, the Fibonacci sequence involved in pretty much everything on earth and even our galaxy and universe which some believe to be the building blocks of life.
Who knows scientists now looking at the holographic universe ?? These are the most intelligent people on our planet so who am I to call bullshit. If there is a creator it doesn't necessarily mean a god maybe just a more intelligent being.
Either way I don't understand why people are fanatical on who is there creator. What does it matter.
