Has anyone ever been? A buddy and mine plan on going sometime this year, and I was wondering what it's like from people who've experienced firsthand.

It's like falling out of the sky. Then an opening shock of the parachute. Followed by a landing that can very from soft as pillow to bone breakingly painful, or fatal.

If you survive the jump, try hang gliding. I had been sky diving for about a year when I discovered hang gliding. Never went back.

Flying Gliders is very inexpensive and lots of fun too.
You should definitely try that !
